Northwest Vintage Motocross Championship Series Round 3: Woodland Motocross Park (Left) Chris Clark dominated the Open and Over 30 Expert classes at round three of the Northwest Vintage Motocross Championship Series. (Below) Paul Thompson (43) was a twoclass winner in Woodland, Washington, posting the 250cc and Over 40 Expertclass wins during the Evolution portion of the program. STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY liGHT WOODLAND, WA, NOV. 17 Z-mounted Chris Clark's reign of terror continued throughout the Northwest with the Oregonian's latest two-class rampage, at round three of the Northwest Vintage and Evolution Motocross Championship Series, held at Woodland Motocross Park in southern Washington. Clark clobbered the competition, going four for four in moto wins in the Open and Over 30 Vintage Expert classes. Joining Clark in the elite ranks of double-class winners on the day were Oregon's Joe Casey, who topped the 125cc and 250cc Vintage Expert classes; Josh Waring, a three-class contestant on the day who won the 125cc Vintage and 125cc Evolution classes and finished second in the 250cc Evolution Intermediate class; Washington's Paul Thompson, who was victorious in the 250cc and Over 40 Evolution (1975-81) Expert classes, keeping his stranglehold on those classes in the series; and Oregon's Jon McLean, who rode his 1974 CZ 400 to wins in the Open and Over 30 Amateur Vintage classes. Clark's first overall win of the day came in the 250cc/Open Vintage Expert and Intermediate contest, which ran combined with the 250cc Expert/Intermediate Evolution class. Clark pulled the holeshot in the first moto and never looked back. Thompson overcame a poor start to join Casey and Blake Landon in a squabble for the runner-up laurels - which would go Thompson's way. Moto two was much the same, as Clark took command and never looked back. Oregon's Jim Row, who was a two-class winner at the recent Hollister AHRMA National, ran a solid second to Clark - where he'd finish - but a motoone DNF spoiled Row's day. A battle raged behind the lead duo between Jonathan Stuart, Casey, Landon and Thompson; this one went in favor of Stuart, who was also among the DNF casualties in moto one. Clark, Rowand John Adams were the top three Open Expert riders, while Maico-mounted Jerry Homola, Kenny Brynn and Nick Caldwell topped the Intermediate portion. In the adjoined 250cc Vintage class, Casey edged Landon in moto two to snare the overall Expert-class win ahead of Landon and Kyle Webster, while Bultaco rider Roger Landberg destroyed the competition in the Intermediate class. Thompson, despite losing out to Stuart in moto two, snared an overall win in the 250cc Evolution Expert class, followed by Yamaha rider Christopher James and Stuart. Charlie Martin topped the competitive Intermediate portion via a 1-1 sweep to lead Warring (2-2) and Ed Strom (3-3). Clark later came back to roast the competition in the combined Over 30/0ver 40 Expert class, beating Husqvarna rider Keith Webster to the finish in moto one. Webster couldn't repeat his moto-one performance the second time out after tangling with another rider and Landon filled the number-two slot, behind Clark, at the finish. Clark's win came in the Over 30 class, while Webster, who charged to trail Clark, Landon (the second Over 30 Expert), Over 30 Intermediate winner J.R. Cunningham, and Over 40 Intermediate winner Kenny Brynn at moto's end to snag the Over 40 Expert-class win. One of the day's best battles was waged in the Under 40 Evolution Amateur class, between Maico riders James Conway and Dan Cunningham. While Conway had his way in moto one, Dan held Conway at bay for much of moto two before relinquishing the lead. Kyle Johnson, who separated Conway and Cunningham late in moto one, finished third overall with a 2-4 score, followed by Paul Richard (6-3) and Blake Westrom (4-7). Yamaha riders Monty Price and Kurt Stevens also spent much of both motos in a heated confrontation in the Open Evolution Expert class. Eventually, Stevens got around Sawtell to settle into second, but by that point Price had too great a lead to overcome. Moto two was all Stevens, who was never challenged en route to his moto win, which was good for the overall win. Price, Sawtell, Greg Rodgers, James and Karey Krahel trailed. The day's largest class was the 250cc Vintage Amateur class, which was won by Honda-mounted Dan Cunha, who clobbered the competition in both motos to lead Bultaco rider Travis Anderberg (2-3) and CZ pilot Adam Saario (4-2) overall to compliment his earlier Over 40 Amateur Vintage-class win. eN Woodland Matacross Par1c Woodland, Washington Results: November 17, 2001 (Round 31 Vintage WMN: 1.
