Henry County Fairgrounds: The 50Cc Shaft class prepares to leave the gate at the penultimate round of the Midwest Challenge Series in Paris, Tennessee. Midwest Challenge Series Round 6: Henry County Fairgrounds Lomax, White Clean House Bv RANDV SANSOM PARIS, TN, OCT. 20 fter a two-week hiatus, stadiacross racing resumed at the sixth round of the Midwest Challenge Series, held at the Henry County Fairgrounds in Paris, Tennessee. Thanks to sunny skies and warm temperatures, 245 riders from four states all brought their"A game" to the track and were ready to do battle. The two stellar performers of the evening were Chas Lomax in the 50cc Shaft class and Kenneth White in the Over 30 B/C class. In the 50cc Shaft qualifier, PW50 rider Cody Haskins powered to a huge holeshot down the start straight and maintained his advantage through the first few turns. Round five's winner, Rosie Evans, gated poorly in eighth but was on a mission, slicing through the pack with speed and tenacity'- In fact, she passed half the field before the completion of lap one! Early leader Haskins had the moto in control until lap three, when he bobbled in the corner after the stadium whoops and stalled his machine. In an instant, Z50 pilot Chas Lomax inherited the lead and began to put the power to the ground and pulled a small gap over fellow red rider Tristen Pickens, who was A 40 DECEMBER 12, 2001 • cue I feeling heavy pressure from Evans. With less than a lap left in the heat race, Evans cut underneath Pickens in the first turn and took over second place. She narrowed the gap on the leader at the checkers but simply ran out of time. When the checkers flew, Lomax took the win over Evans, Pickens, Corey Finley and holeshot artist Haskins. When the gate dropped for the 50cc Shaft finale, all the riders immediately began bumping elbows while jockeying for position on the start straight. Qualifier holeshot specialist Haskins again took the point position, but he rubbed plastic with Yamaha rider Dakota Williams entering the stadium whoop section and was relegated to second. Yamaha pilot Evans again gated poorly but was on the gas, with all intentions of taking the win. After taking the lead, Williams was riding aggressively and setting a good pace out front. Within one lap, Evans moved from ninth into fifth and was setting a torrid pace. By the fourth of eight laps, Williams dropped back into the pack while Lomax again motored to the front of the pack and was not going to be denied. The real battle for the remaining four laps was between Evans and XR50 rider Corey Finley, who was holding down third but came under attack 'IS n e _ • from Evans. Repeatedly, Evans would pass Finley entering the corners, but she would be outaccelerated on the straights by the four-stroke XR. This cat-and-mouse battle lasted for three laps before Evans finally made a pass stick on the finish-line tabletop on the white-flag lap. Evans pulled a small margin with one lap remaining to garner third at the finish. Lomax took the class win, followed by Haskins, Evans, Finley and Blake Coleman. The Over 30+ B/C qualifier was action-packed. Yamaha YZ426F pilot Conrad Long snared the holeshot in the four-lap heat. Perennial class winner Kenneth White emerged in second, but the majority of the field ended up in a pile in the middle of turn one. By the end of lap one, White had found his way around Long and begun to pull away from the field. Meanwhile, YZ250 rider Chris Rowlette was holding down third, followed by Bobby Evans on his CR250. Lee Manning, one of the riders caught up in the firstlap melee, was on the gas, and he moved into fourth spot by the middle of lap four. When the checkers flew, White took the win over Long, Rowlette, Manning and Evans. When the Over 30 B/C main event got under way, White absconded with a large holeshot. Always a threat in this class, White was on the gas, and he checked out from the field in short order. As White and his CR250 methodically pulled away from the pack, Long, Manning and Rowlette held down the second through fourth spots, respectively. The running order stayed basically the same throughout the 'moto, with all riders remaining within striking distance of one anoth- er but not close enough to mount a serious charge. One rider who was determined to get an improved finish was Yamaha speedster Michael Singleton. The thumper pilot rallied to a fifth-place finish in the final after carding a seventh-place finish in the qualifier. As the checkers flew after eight quick laps, White took an easy win over Long, Manning, Rowlette and Singleton. With one round remaining in the seven-race series, many riders are in the midst of tight points battles for the championship, which will unfold at the final event of the year. Dreyer Molorsports/Podium One Mammoth East Podium One Gold Series Round 20: Paoli Peaks Baker Tames the Mountain Bv MARK BUCHANAN PAOU, IN, OCT. 20 D reyer Motorsports and Podium One put on the second annual Mammoth East event in Paoli, Indiana. This year, the event was moved from the ski slopes to the east face of the mountain, where a longer, natural-terrain motocross track could be laid out. The grass track featured a few natural jumps, along with a slightly built-up tabletop jump, and lots of uphill and downhill sections over approximately two miles. The event was also round 20 of 23 in the Podium One Gold Series and counted toward season points. Jeff Baker dominated the first day of racing at the two-day event on his Pro Circuit/Dreyer Yamahas, taking three out of four moto wins in the 125cc A and 250cc A classes. Yamaha rider Michael Campbell took the holeshot in the first 250cc A moto, in front of Willy Browning, on an F&S Suzuki, and Larry "Sluggo" Gessner, on a Podium One/Cycle Shed KTM. Campbell held the lead for the first lap but dropped back to fifth on the second lap. Scott Craven moved into the lead on a Suspension Works/S&S Powersports Suzuki, but he was soon passed by David Oettel, on a MotoXtremes Husqvarna. Kevin Lampe held third on a Thompson's Motor-
