CMA O'Neal MX Series Round 2: Fresno Fairgrounds Taking It Up a Notch By EDDIE GRAVELINE FRESNO, CA, NOV. 3 lectricity filled the morning air at the County Fairgrounds in Fresno. In a way, it was just another local race, but you could tell by looking at all the riders that it meant much more. Round two of the CMA O'Neal MX series put these riders in a much bigger venue, with a lot more fans than they're accustomed to seeing. An Extreme Bounty Hunter race was to take place on the same track later that evening, and the local TV and radio hype had been huge. The track was full-on supercross, and all this made the event feel like a much bigger deal than just another round of a local series. For their part, the racers seemed to step it up a notch to match the atmosphere. It started in the Mini classes and worked up from there. Chris Plouffe came up from Castaic to ride the 65cc Novice class and was absolutely dominant. He swept both motos and was just too much for local boys Kyle Kessinger and David Fee, who finished second and third, respectively. When the 85cc riders came to the line, all eyes were on factory-backed Honda riders Mike and Jeff Alessi. E Parker Valley MX: Justin Falls (88) pulls the holeshot in 125cc Beginner action at the final round of the IMS Pro Series/Carolina Ultra Series In Bellwood, North Carolina. was awarded second, and again Dickson, Bryant and Earls rounded out the top five. Dickson's day was far from over, as he returned to do battle with Billy Liles in the Over 25 A and Over 30 A classes. In the Over 25 A contest, Liles (2-1) took the overall over Dickson (1-2). They traded places in the Over 30 A class, as Dickson got the overall over Liles by winning the second moto. Liles returned to win the Over 35 contest. After pulling both holeshots, he wasted no time pulling away. He was followed by Rick Wright, Donnie Foster, David Eller and Nicky Baker. The Over 30 C class had some new blood. Recently-turned-30 rider Jason Koenig, of KORE Cycles, riding in what he vowed would be his last C race, battled Monte Lewis for the win. These two set the pace all day. Lewis took the first-moto win, but he had to settle for second in moto two as Koenig took the win and overall. They were followed by Chris Shortridge, Mike McMenamin and Mark Ellis. Dakota Matthews continued his winning ways at the final round, as he took the 50cc (7-8) victory. The other 50cc winners were Tyler McSwain, in the 50cc (4-6) class, and Zach Murphy, who won the 50cc Shaft class. B.J. Huntsinger retumed after a little break to post overalls, just like he was doing before his time off. He won the Schoolboy class over perennial front-runner Jeremy Allison, the everconsistent Travis Flowers, Matt Miller and Tim Myers. HuntSinger's 125cc B win was a little tougher, as he had to defeat Jason Wiley and Blake Hovis. This race ran in conjunction with the Pro class, on the same gate. It gave the crowd a chance to see how fast these B riders really are. There were several Pro riders looking at back 32 DECEMBER 5, 2001 • cue fenders of B riders, as the pace was fast. Huntsinger, Wiley and Hovis were followed by Bryan Walker and Miller. Some classes weren't decided until the last moto of the last round, because this has always been a very competitive series and this title is coveted by all who compete for it. eN Partler Vllley MX Bellwood, Nortb Carolinl Results: October 28, 2001 [Final roundl 50 SHAFT: I. Gaylon Dickson I e ne""s Jeff is one year younger than Mike and still rides the Intermediate class, but the Expert division was on the same gate, so the two were set to battle on the track. In the first moto, Mike got the holeshot and there wasn't anything that anyone else could do about it. He raced uncontested, though Jeff was never more than a couple of seconds behind. Jeff won the first moto of the Intermecliate class easily, over San Jose's Jacob Sanchez and Clovis' Nick Baker. The final moto was where things got interesting. Jeff Alessi grabbed the holeshot and led his older brother by a couple of bike lengths into the first turn. After a lap, Jeff still led and was actually pulling Mike through the whoops. This continued until Mike made a pretty rough bloc~-pass to take the lead. Jeff went down, but he got up in time to beat Baker to the finish. Baker edged out Sanchez for second overall. As usual, the 125cc classes were comprised of some of the youngest, most aggressive racers and provided some of the best action of the day. The Novice division featured some very tight racing between Shawn Burk and Marcus Trimble. Burk, looking like he's ready for the move up to the Intermediate class, won both r-------------------------------, ~ 8
