In the Classic 500cc Expert show, Clark Sumner, on a Cheney powered by a 500cc Triumph twin, won overall with 1-2 moto scores, ahead of Rob Poole, who rode his BSA to 3-1 moto scores. Third in this class was Allen McBee, who rode Pat Hicks' finelooking Ariel single. The biggest classes of the day were the Over 40 contests, and the starting gate in the Novice race was nearly sold out. Sixteen riders were scored in both motos, but Donnie Wilson kept his Yamaha clear of the mob and went 1 -1 to win the day, while Clinton Carr and Darrell Sedig traded moto scores to emerge second and third, respectively. The Premier Lightweight Intermediate contest was a May/Septem- SLIM WINTERS TULARE, CA, NOV. 4 T he big rider turnout at Tulare Cycle Park enjoyed perfect overcast racing weather for the fifth annual Gerald Rogers Memorial Motocross, named for the popular AJS and Matchless rider who succumbed to a brain tumor in 1997. Because of the cloud cover, the Triple M Racing crew needed only minimal track grooming to provide lots of that big-bike traction for which the Tulare soil is famous. Gary Cochell from nearby Visalia won first place in two classes. Although Cochell was unopposed in the Premier 500cc Intermediate class, he had to battle with George Gerstenberg in the Classic 500cc Intermediate class. Gerstenberg won the first moto on a classy-looking Cheney BSA, but ber affair, as 18-year-old Wesley Poole won the first moto just ahead of Larry Madrigal, who sometimes races in the Over 60 classes. Both riders were riding BSA C-15 models. Youth was to be denied on this day, however, when Poole's exhaust pipe came adrift and gave Madrigal the performance edge he needed to win the second moto and first place on the day. Young Poole returned to win the Open Age Intermediate class on a BSA against a field of two-stroke machines. In Premier Open Twins action, BSA A-I0 mounted Joel Sweeney won the first Expert moto over TriBSA rider Danny Davies, and he also seemed to have the second moto wrapped up after Davies nearly looped his 40-inch twin at the starting gate and had to play catch-up. Late in the race, however, Sweeney lost the front end and slid off, giving Davies the lead. What's worse, Sweeney lost any chance to regain the lead when the front fender that had been dislodged in the crash fouled the frame and threw the rider from Jackson down again. Davies won overall, followed by Sweeney and AJS-mounted Dave Janiec from Ridgecrest. eN Tulare Cycle Parte Tulare, California Results: November 4, ZOOl [Round 8 of 91 PREM LIT NOV: 1.
