Briggs & Stratton Motorplex Schnabel Super at Superbikers2 By GORDON LUNDE ELKHART LAKE, WI, OCT. 27 Road America Superbikers2 ended the 2001 season on a high note, with excellent weather and great racing. AMA National number·33 flat-tracker J.R. Schnabel tumed out to be the man on a mission, as he won it all on his first try at these supermotard events. Starting on the last row in the heat race, Schnabel wasted no time taking his Team Powell/Torque Center CR250 Honda to the front. By lap four, he was out front and breaking away. Giving a heated chase was 14-yearold Jesse Janisch, who started alongside Schnabel at the back of the pack. Janisch followed Schnabel across the line aboard his Midcities Motorsports-sponsored CR250. In the semifinal event, Schnabel and Janisch started up front and made a break immediately. John Altmann, Shane Meyers, Andy Mauk and Ron Zastrow all traded places behind the two flying Honda riders but could not make a challenge. In the final event, Altmann jumped out front at the start and led through turn four, where Schnabel went by for the lead. Altmann, aboard the Fuel Cafe/Sf,B Construction 620 KTM, held second until Janisch got by in tum four also, on lap two. Shane Meyers and Ron Zastrow rounded out the top five by lap three. Schnabel almost lost the lead and the race when he got into a wicked slide exiting tum six and nearly high-sided on lap four. The talented dirt tracker shook it off, though, and put his head down and increased his lead. Janisch was trying hard to close the gap and had some moments of his own. Running deep into the comers, Jesse was trying not to use up the underpowered front brakes he's not used to using on the dirt ovals and motocross tracks on which he nonnally races. The young gun, who hopes to go road racing in a couple of years, finished second again to Schnabel, but he had a ball doing it. Altmann took his KTM home third, followed by 360cc Huskymounted Meyers and 400cc Yamaha rider Andy Mauk. Results S/MOTARD: l. J.R. Schnabel (Hon): 2. JeSIe JDnlsdl (Hon); 3. John "Itmann (KTM); 4. OCT. 27-28 Sandia Motorcycle Roadracing Incorporated finished their inaugural race season with an excellent weekend of racing at the challenging, high-speed. 1.4-mile Arroyo Seco Motorplex course near Deming, New Mexico. There was a great turnout of more than 40 racers representing New Mexico, Arizona. Wyoming, Texas and Colorado. To cap off an exciting weekend of practice and racing, two SMRI members broke the previous track record of 1:12.23. Todd Costley and Rob Christman both had consistent times under 1: 12, with Christman posting a 1: 11.32 and establishing a new counterclockwise track record. Both riders surpassed the previous record on their Supersportspec Yamaha R6s as they pushed each other lap after lap, continually lowering their lap times. At the end of the day, Michron lap timers were inspected by SMRi officials and confirmed the manual stopwatch times of the raceTS, offi~ dally recognizing a new track record. The Grandma's Music and Sound-sponsored Unlimited GP, which establishes next year's top plate numbers, was the feature race of the weekend. Racers included Colorado riders Christman and Mark Schellinger and New Mexico riders Costley and Keith Miller. Costley and Christman battled head to head to determine who would be the New Mexico State Champion. Christman crossed the finish line first on his Yamaha R6, followed by Costley and Schellinger. However, Costley will be running the number-one plate for the 2002 season after riding consistent and fast races in this, his first season back after an extended leave from racing. The first Formula Three race of the season was run complete with a l.e Mans-style start. Although only four riders were present, they prOVided exciting racing for the fans. Sean McNew starting last. rode an incredible race to take first place at the end of the eight-lap sprint. The popular Over 40 race was dominated by New Mexico rider Mickey Patten, who led the field of five riders on a Suzuki GSX-R600. The Novice classes prOVided excitement at each race this season, and they upheld their reputation again this weekend. In the Novice Open class, Leigh Chapman took the win and demonstrated that his Suzuki GSXR600 had the speed to dominate. The Heavyweight Superbike race provided an "on your feet" exciting race, as Costley was 3qle to finish first over Arizona rider John Juette. Christman had a slight mishap and finished third but posted the new track record of 1: 1 1.32 while he was reeling in the leaders. I Results Ull GP: I. Rob Christman (Yam); 2. Todd Costley (Yom); 3.
