California Racing Club Sponsorship Series Round 4: Edwards Air Force Base Track Expert classes. Scott Roegner went 2-2 in the Four-Stroke class, over Jeremy Ferro and Kyle Jones. Austin Keys (KTM). m eam Moto XXX's newest recruit, Michael Young, proved to be unbeatable on the Desert Wheels Motorcycle Club-prepped sand track at Edwards Air Force Base, as he aced both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, while Derek Costella made the trek down from Las Vegas worthwhile by winning the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes, during round four of the 13th annual California Racing Club/Galpin Ford/VSK/ PVK-backed Sponsorship Series. George LaMonte exited the first turn with the 250cc Pro holeshot, ahead of Jason Wood, Raymond Smith and Travis Smith. LaMonte's lead lasted a lap and a half before Wood went under him at the top of a hill. Young gated midpack, but by the start of lap three he had closed to Wood's back door, with Raymond running in third, ahead of Chris Neitzel. A lap later, Young was out front and pulling away for the win. Wood, Neitzel and Raymond went at it over second place on the last lap, with Wood coming out on top. LaMonte got off to another great start in moto two, only to be overtaken by Raymond, Wood and Young by the end of lap one. Young made his way to the front by lap two, with Raymond and Wood matching his every move. Young would eventually put five seconds on Wood en route to his sweep of the class. Raymond Smith held off a determined Andreu Labrador and Travis Smith at the line to collect the third-place payback, behind Wood. Young went wire to wire for the 125cc Pro first-moto win aboard his YZ250F. YZ125-mounted Chris Tocco was slowly closing in on Young, but he ran out of time and had to settle for second place, ahead of Wood. Young and Tocco went at it over the lead right from the drop of the gate in moto two. The duo traded the lead back and forth, with Young ultimately holding off Tocco on the final lap for his second class win on the day. Wood went 3-3. YZ250F-mounted Scott Howe got the holeshot in the opening 125cc Intermediate moto, with Costella, Justin Eide and Josh Bagge giving chase. Howe and Costella swapped the lead back and forth a couple of times, with Costella holding a slim two-second margin over Howe when the checkers fell. Cody Hertel worked PIW ADV: I. (Bottom) VZ426F· mounted Patrick Wade won both the Four-Stroke and Junior Vet Expert classes. his way up into a third-place finish, ahead of Anthony Barbacovi and Shaun Trabert. Round two was virtually a duplicate of the first, as Howe and Costella argued over the lead, with Costella putting a couple of seconds on Howe on the final circuit. Hertel was third again, with Trabert and Barbacovi reversing finishing positions in fourth and fifth, respectively. Costella put his FMF/Spy / Axobacked RM250 into the point position right from the drop of the gate in the first 250cc Intermediate moto and was never challenged. Howe sliced his way up into second place by lap three, but by then Costella had checked out. Third went to Bagge, followed by Shane Smith, Mark Allen and Eide. After a couple of restarts due to a stubborn starting gate, it was all Costella in the second moto. Howe was a bit quicker in making it up into the runner-up position this time out, but he couldn't match Costella's pace, and he went 2-2. Bagge collected the third-place trophy on a pair of fine 3-3 rides, ahead of the 6-4 score of Eide and 5-5 tally of Allen. Mike Alessi continues to destroy his competition throughout this series. On this day, he went six for six moto wins to top the 85cc (12-13), Supermini and Schoolboy classes aboard his Hondas. Mike's brother Jeff finished second in the Superminis but crashed out of the 85cc (12-13) class while running in second place, handing the position over to Kyle Griffith. Barbacovi was runner-up in the Schoolboy class, followed by Brandon Reina and Lester Varnum. Chad Geib took the 125cc Novice first-moto win, ahead of Ricky Hemme, after series points leader Ricky Park's bike seized on lap two. Ryan Riess went down in tum one in moto one and would finish an eventual ninth. Riess returned to go wire to wire for the second-moto win and fourth overalL behind Geib (1-2), Hemme (2-3) and Reina (3-5).
