escape the sharp eyes of a nearby course marshal. (Left) Pare Fenne never looked so good. One of the highlights of the night was when the four members of the 1973 Vase team stepped forward to be reunited for the first time in over two decades. Malcolm Smith, Dick Burleson, Ed Schmidt Sr, and Ron Bohn received standing applause for giving America its first ever ISDT Vase Team championship. Several annual awards were presented to noted members of the group. Doug Wilford was the recipient of the Bud Ekins Pioneer Award for his years of contributing to the American Six Day effort with the Penton team. Ron Ribolzi accepted the AI Eames Award on behalf of the Missouri Mudders for their hours of preparation and hard work in providing a stellar weekend for the ISDT enthusiasts. The Marcia MacDonald Team Manager Award for organizational work behind the scenes was presented to the Winters family and the Razorback Riders club for their diligent work in making the first four ISDT Reunion Rides memorable. And Billy Uhl received the Leroy Winters Award from Leroy's son, Bart. As Bart said, his dad often spoke of putting together a team, and the first rider he said he would choose was Billy Uhl. Upon receiving the award, Billy gave an eloquent and impassioned speech about the need for Americans to reclaim and utilize their rights to use public land for recreational use, be it for motorcycling, horseback riding, hiking, bird watching, camping or whatever. Billy works full time maintaining public use areas in Idaho and, in his words, it is a violation of our civil rights as defined by law to be excluded from recreational pursuits on public land. He encouraged everyone to become informed and active in protecting these rights, as there are many special interest groups that are trying to strip everyone of the ability to utilize public lands for recreation of any kind. The second day of competition found the field thinned somewhat due to mechanical failures and a few injuries. Once again, the Missouri Mudders laid out a challenging course, today a 30-mile loop with a tighter time schedule that caught a number of riders late at the first known control. The course returned to the impound area where riders staged for what has become one of the highlights of the event, the final Roger Ganner stepped out to an early lead on his Triumph twin followed closely by Claude McElvain's booming BSA, Graham Foster's beautiful white Matchless Metisse, and Beno Rodi's yellow Snortin' Norton. The racing was intense with Ganner edging McElvain at the finish by less than two seconds. Bugsy Mann could be seen smiling broadly as he cheered the riders on each lap, but the biggest smile was worn by 77-year-old Jim Cameron who later received a special award from the German team as the oldest competitor in the Reunion Ride. Each successive moto featured intense racing with riders vying either to retain top standings in their classes or simply for personal joy and satisfaction. The array of bikes was spectacular, with many Pentons and Husqvarnas, Maicos, Bultacos, Ossas, Jawas, Zundapps, Rokons, as well as CR and MR Hondas. It was like a step back in time with riders and spectators alike enjoying the afternoon time travel. The final moto was perhaps the most anticipated as it pitted many of the ISDT heroes against each other. Jack Penton took an early lead off the line and cut the first corner, pulling a prank on his buddies, but hard charging Dick Burleson soon reeled him in and the real racing was on. The grass track was mostly level ground with a number of turns and if smaller jumps, a concession to the vintage bikes, however there was one substantial table-top jump midcourse, which soon became the site of a "big air" contest between Burleson, Penton, Tim Surdkyke and a few others. One rider later remarked that Lars Larsson, "the Old Swede", passed him about 15 feet in the air! All too soon, the racing was over and it was time to load bikes and gear .The medal ceremony followed soon thereafter with many of the ISDT veterans thanking the organizers and the crowd for a wonderful grass track motos. A large crowd gathered to watch the competition, nine motos in all to weekend and promising to return. As the sun set over Park Hills, the pits slowly emptied out and tired, satisfied riders set course for home. The Missouri Mudders pulled off a cover all the classes of bikes entered. The first moto was music to the ears of the vintage crowd as it featured all the big four-stroke twins and singles. wonderful weekend full of Six Daysstyle competition and unmatched fellowship between ISDT vets and vintage enduro enthusiasts. The Reunion (Above) Carl Cranke - always happy to go riding. Ride will most likely return to Park Hills again next fall. It is the next best thing to going to the ISDT and is an event no vintage fan can afford to miss. eN SPRTSMN OPEN INT: I. Pete Petrick; 2. Steve Sweet (Hon). SPRTSMN OPEN NOV: I. Kevin Dowler; 2.
