The best race of the day was the reducedfield Expert 80cc GP contest. Ian Igercic was quickest off the line and won the first-tum battle to lead Ben Morse, Skye Girard and Leonard Mellgren, only a heartbeat behind. By lap four, Girard had taken the lead from Igercic with a inside braking move, diving under Igercic into turn seven. Mellgren, biding his time in fourth. had begun his calculated march toward the front. Girard held the slimmest of leads through lap nine, when Mellgren deftly overtook Girard and opened up a slight lead, Leading the conga line to the checkers, Mellgren had a firm lead, with Girard, Morse and Igercic following in tight formation behind, In the end, there were no losers in this race - just full dance cards. Unfortunately, the afternoon race lost its fire early on. with Mellgren taking an easy win. Morse came in second with a solid run. Igercic hung on to third, while Girard finished fourth after low-siding on lap one. Not only did he put a Tennessee whippin' on his classes. but, after coming out of a staggerstart gate, he passed seasoned Over 25 and Over 40 riders and finished the combined motos running third, behind 125cc A rider Jamaal Bond and 125cc B rider Tyler Brown. It seems blue was the color of the day. Running in 8Scc Senior and Supermini, 14year-old Bryce Cowley of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, crossed the Mississippi River and brought the 'Show Me State of mind" with him. Competing against fellow Missourian Brandon Burrow and Brighton, Tennessee's Troy West, Cowley and his Yamaha gobbled up the two Honda riders early in all four motos of 85cc Senior and Supermini racing and claimed the top trophies for each class. Burrow, a competitor with a big heart for a 12year-old, hung with Cowley for all four laps of each moto but couldn't quite seem to muster the MX muscle to reel him in. Burrow took second in both classes, with West turning in two third-place finishes. As if that wasn't enough, Derek Luther, yet another YZ jockey, battled with Honda man Dusty Webb in the 250cc C contest and took the overall class win with a 2-1 moto score. Webb won moto one but couldn't hold off Luther in moto two, and once again blue had reigned over red. It was one of those blue kind of days. Rere (Hus). OfT INT: 1. Lars Bums!de (Hon); 2. Wilson Returns to Redwood BY JOHN MILLS Saavedra Takes It BY Roo GIRARD WILLOW SPRINGS, CA, OCT. 7 For round 10 of its championship series, the California Motorcycle Road Racing Association made a much-anticipated return to the Willow Springs Kart Track. The paddock buzzed with positive energy as cool temperatures and nearly perfect conditions spawned some incredibly close, exciting riding in the morning races. A combined Amateur formula SO/Senior Modified race opened the event, with 13-yearold Ashley Caldwell delivering one of the best rides of the day. Starting almost last, Caldwell sliced and diced through the field to a dazzling Amateur Formula 50 win, behind Senior Modified winner Tommy Crawford. Damian Saavedra fought an ill-running bike for second in the Amateur Formula 50 portion, with J.D. Schendel taking third and Scott Gamer fourth. Although it was a combined race, the field was evenly matched. with Senior rider Ken Gill finishing third, ahead of Saavedra, and second in Senior Modified competition. In the afternoon race, Saavedra and Caldwell quickly broke away and ran pretty much unchallenged. Caldwell pressed Saavedra, but with his motor demons exorcised, Saavedra easily held off Caldwell. Derek Gill moved up to take third. Garner came in a consistent fourth, Who races 50cc motorcycles? The beautiful Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia, Spain, home to both World Super Bike and GP, is named for a local hero and World 50cc Champion. Honorable mention goes to Josh Herrin, the youngest of the young lions on this week~ end, who looked very good during Saturday's practice and even better on race day. Starting deep in the pack of the 23-rider Beginner Stock class, young Herrin quickly moved up through the field, earning a fabulous second place overall on his first race weekend, behind winner Syimphia Vu. 50 (4.6): 1 Dllvid Beebe (Cob): 2.
