Kentucky State MX Championship U.S. Mega Series Round 17: Daniel Boone MX Smith Sails to Fall Classic Win By SUSAN S. WILLIAN LONDON, KY, OCT. 7 TM/Red Bull/Thor/HJC/Alpinestars' Kelly Smith went undefeated in the Eastern Four-Stroke Pro Nationals at round 17 of the U.S. Mega Series and the Kentucky State MX Championship as he chalked up double moto wins and then claimed the overall in the 250cc A class. Cycra/Cernics/ Axo/Showa/MX Tech's Jeff Gibson hopped off the gate in the first Four-Stroke Pro moto, followed by Smith, Jon Boruff and Rodney Carrier. Gibson and Smith stretched their leads, and on the fifth lap, Smith passed Gibson as Gibson lost control of his bike on a downhill. "I got the holeshot and tried riding as hard as I could," sajd Ohio's Gibson. "I started pulling away, but I made a few mistakes. The ruts caused some problems for me_ I got cross-rutted [and) let Smith by, and then I had some problems with my shock. I hung on to Kelly for a little bit ,but he just ran away at the end." Smith remained in front and was unstoppable for the remainder. "I was in second on the start and was just waiting for an opportunity, for Gibson to make a mistake," Smith sajd. "I found a smooth line to finally go by him. I was about four seconds ahead. Then he erred and I pulled by. I just kept watching him through the moto. I have won every moto of the Eastern Four-Stroke so far." Yamaha/Pro Action/Bjg Gun/Sinisalo/Scott-backed local favorite Kevin Walker and Planet Racing's Yamaha-mounted Matt Walker got poor starts. Kevin managed to finish third, while Matt took fifth. K 54 NOVEMBER 21. 2001 • II: U II: I In the second moto, Smith was in charge off the gate, with Matt, Brian "Spud" Walters and Boruff in pursuit. Matt tried everywhere on the course to get by Smith early in the moto, but Smith pulled away. Midway through the moto, Matt closed the distance to Smith. With two laps to go, Smith opened his throttle and again pulled away from Walker. Then Walker miscued around a turn, going down before a set of doubles. He then had trouble restarting his machine and lost several positions. Smith claimed the win, with Walters second and Gibson third. Matt Walker placed sixth. "The track has been slick all day where they watered it," Walker commented. "I jumped the big double and lost my front end, and then it caught and shot me up in the air. When you can't get your bike started, it is all over." Smith returned in the 250cc Pro contest and was unstoppable, leadiog from the first tum to the checkers in moto one. Tommy Hofmaster and Gibson clashed for second near the end of the moto. Hofmaster filed by in the runner-up spot, with Gib50n third, Josh Summey fourth and Walters fifth. In the second moto, Smith was still in control for the win, tallying the overall. Walters moved into second in the moto, with Gibson chalking up another third and Hofmaster finishing fourth. In the first 125cc Pro moto, Brad Strunk rounded turn one first, followed by Kevin Walker. Matt Walker started midpack but moved up to eighth on the first lap. Kevin filed by Strunk early in the moto and stretched his lead. Positions changed rapidly during the first half of the moto; Steve Andrich moved up to second and tried to chase down Kevin Walker. Kevin held first to the checkers. Matt n _ .... s • charged through the pack and past Strunk. On the final lap, Andrich dropped to fourth as Matt claimed second and Strunk third. "When you start out front, it's a whole lot easier," declared Tennessee's Kevin Walker. "Staying on the motorcycle and keeping mud off my goggles was my main objective. It was muddy. There were probably a lot of guys out there faster than me." "I started off about 15th and I picked off riders," said Georgia's Matt Walker. "It was really one line. I just kept thinking if I got second, I could win the next moto maybe." A determined Matt fired off the gate in the front position in moto two, followed by Kevin. By the second lap, Matt had stretched his lead, and he remained in front for the moto win with a 15-second lead over Strunk. Matt took the overall win with a 2-1 tally. Kevin experienced bad luck, pulling off the course when his engine began sputtering. "My engine made a strange noise," Kevin recounted. "Then it locked up when I got back to the pits. I think it's a transmission problem." Kawasaki Team Green/Adventure Sports-supported Ryan Sipes won the overalls in the 125cc Band 250cc B classes, while Suspension Plus/Podium One-backed Justin "Pooh" Sipes claimed overall wins in the 85cc (9-13) and 85cc (12-13) classes. l:III Daai....... AMP/6FI Super 60ld Cup Dctoberfest Series Round 1: Hollister Hills 6P hell Hernandez Hauls at Hollister Hills By JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS HOUJSTER,CA,OCT.7 TM-mounted speedster Ruben Hernandez dominated the 60cc Open class at the opening round of the AMP/GFI Super Gold Cup Octoberfest Series, presented by Merced Powersports and Swift Auto World. Despite a bad start in the first moto, Hernandez simply ran away with both victories, crossing the finish line well ahead of the 12-rider field. K With a number of riders moving up to the 80cc classes recently, Hernandez has taken hold of the 60cc division with very little competition. Behind Hernandez, the runner-up on the day, Michael Flores, had his hands full in moto one as he and Grayson Swift went at it all moto long. Flores kept the pressure on, and just after making the pass for second, Swift went down. While Flores motored on, Swift recovered to hold on to third. Moto two was a near-repeat, although Flores got off
