GFI Racing Fall Series North Round 5: Oatfield Raceway Bv JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS PHOTOS BV JIM ENOS TURLOCK,CA,SEPT.30 -J allon Vohland showed up at the fifth and final round of the GFI Racing Fall Series North and simply let his Pro Circuit Kawasaki do the talking as he aced both motos for the 250cc Pro-class win. As Oatfield is one of his most favorite tracks in Northern California, the veteran speedster won by huge margins in both motos and found his only challenge on the day in moto one. Both David Boothe and Yamaha of Modesto's Craig Truglio got out front early, while Vohland sat midpack among the 10-rider field. However, being the hard-charger he is, Vohland got right onto Truglio's rear fender in a hurry and began applying the pressure. Truglio hung tough for three laps, keeping Vohland at bay and forcing him to seek different lines. And Vohland did just that, diving down inside on a huge berm tum and pushing Truglio off the track upon exiting. Meanwhile, Boothe, aboard his sportscenter.com Suzuki, lay just ahead of the duo. Once by TrugJjo, Vohland quickly zapped Boothe and began stretching out his lead, eventually taking the win. Boothe trailed. Evan Laughridge, Turbo Reif and Truglio rounded out the top five. "I love this track," Vohland said. "The Azevedos do such a great job out here. It gets rough and the ruts get deep. It's hard to pass, and it makes you work a little harder and get a little more creative." In moto two, Vohland got off to a better start, with a solid holeshot over Truglio, Laughridge and Matt McCrummen. Reif came around the first turn near last but was on the move, and he quickly made his way up to Laughridge while Vohland began checking out. It turned into a threeway battle for second between Truglio, Laughridge and Reif, but the Hondamounted Reif looked determined and, once by Laughridge, he put the heat on Truglio. That's when things got ugly. As the two entered a sharp lefthander, Truglio was in the low rut and Reif was going high on the berm. The problem was that Truglio's rut exited right into Reifs line, and with neither shutting down, the two collided and flew off the track. Reif remounted his bike, and it appeared he was going to ride over and check on Truglio, who was still on the ground, obviously in pain. Instead, Reif rode up to Truglio and promptly spun a doughnut next to him, showering him with dirt. Back on the track, Vohland won by a huge margin, followed up by Laughridge, McCrummen, Reif and Boothe. Reif's totally unsportsmanlike, boneheaded move prompted a later discussion with promoter Jack "Corky" Azevedo. Among other 58 NOVEMBER 14,2001 • (Right) Kawasaki jockey Tallon Vohland scored both the 125cc and 250cc Pro overall vlc10ries at the final round of the GFI Racing Fall Series North. (Left) Charfie Morrison rode his Honda to the Schoolboy and 125cc Intermediate overall wins at Oatfield Raceway. (Right) Yamaha-mounted Arik Swan won the 250cc Novice contest in Turfock, California, after a tough three-way battle with Zac Baxter and Robert Blake. things, Reif was advised that moves like that attract poor representation from sponsors. "We've been friends for a long time," Truglio later said. "Then he pulls a move like that. He ran into me, meaning I had an advantage and I wasn't going to shut off. I don't know what he was thinking out there." Well over 500 riders converged on the Oatfield Raceway and, considering it was the final round of the series, the huge turnout was somewhat of a surprise. "We usually get our smallest turnout at the final round of any series," said Azevedo, "but since we only use this track a few times a year, due to our permit restrictions, I think a lot of riders not even in the hunt for a series award come out just to practice and race." Charlie Morrison was back on track after a couple of tough prior rounds. The Honda speedster took both the Schoolboy and 125cc Intermediate overall class wins. However, he did it the hard way, after taking a second in both first motos. Daniel Sani took the first Schoolboy moto win, keeping Morrison behind him, but Morrison rebounded in moto two with a solid holeshot and uncontested victory. In the first 125cc Intermediate moto, Eric McCrummen came out on top after Morrison got a mid pack start, but once again Morrison persevered in moto two with a wire-to-wire victory. In 250 Novice action, it was a three-way battle for the overall between Arik Swan, Zac Baxter and Robert Blake. The trio cut loose from the pack early on in both motos. In moto one, Swan held off Blake in a moto-Iong battle in which Swan ended up getting a little help from lappers on the white-flag lap. However, in moto two, Baxter took the early lead, with Swan and Blake tucked in cue • e neVY's close behind. As the trio crossed the finish line a mere bike length apart, Swan scored a crucial second, giving him the overall with a 1-2 score. Baxter ended up second with a 3-1 tally, while Blake carded a 2-3 to round out the top three. eN llatlield Race.s, Turlacll, Cslifllmis Results: September 30, 2801 [Round 5 of 5) Pee Wee Track 50 (4-6) P/W JR: 1.
