AHRMA Western Regional Vintage Motocross Series Round 9: Willow Creek Motocross Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY liGHT ~RAS,OR,SEPT.30 ashington's Dallas Nyblod, riding a 1974 Yamaha YZ250, scored a pair of overall Expert-class victories at round nine of the AHRMA Western Regional Vintage Motocross Series at Willow Creek Motocross Park in central Oregon, posting the 250cc and Over 40 Expert-class wins on the high desert. Well over 200 participants were on hand from six western states and Canada, but few were as dominant as Nyblod. Though Nyblod had brutally tough competition in both of his classes, the Vintage MX pioneer held off challenges from fellow Evergreen State rider Larry Legarra to post his first win on the day in the Over 40 class. Californian Tom McKinney was Nyblod's closest competitor in 250cc action. Local rider Aaron Hohman was equally impressive. Riding a stocklooking Honda XL350 (although it was powered by a hopped-up Powroll motor), Hohman won the Sportsman 500cc and Open Age Expert classes to stand in a sma II circle of doubleclass winners on the day, which also included Jon Wall and Wesley Poole. Wall, who rode a 1974 Yamaha YZ250 and a sano Ariel-powered Rickman, topped the Sportsman 250cc and Premier 500cc Intermediate classes with 2- ] and 1-1 tallies, respectively. In the Premier 500cc Expert class, Californian Kelly Shane and Legarra went bar to bar in both motos, but it was Shane who nabbed the overall win after Legarra encountered problems with his Ariel and went 1-5 for second overall. Nyblod and Legarra (who was a three-class contestant) banged bars in the Over 40 Expert class, the best moto being the first one. Californian Steve Parker put his Husky out front at the unleashing, but he only held the point position for one lap. After that, both Nyblod and Legarra took command; the lead changed several times (as it would in the following moto also), but it was Nyblod who narrowly netted a win, despite lapped traffic at the finish. Nyblod also won moto two for a sweep ahead of Legarra (2-2), Husky rider Dirk Murphy (4-3), Parker (3-4), Maico rider Tom Bentley (5-5) and Neil Giertsen (6-6). Californian Bob Stuscavale rode in close proximity with the Expert riders en route to his win in the adjoined Over 40 Intermediate class. Riding a Bultaco 360, Stuscavale headed up both motos to lead Yamaha rider Carlos Romero (2-4), Randy Pew (4-3), local rider Klaus Homan (3-5) and Mike Roebuck (7 -6) into the top five overall. W Legarra, who rode a Bultaco, an Ariel and a Suzuki/Bultaco hybrid, used the Bultaco EI Bandito to top both motos in the combined Classic 500cc Expert/Intermediate and Premier Open Twin class. BSA rider Mike Atkins, who made the trek from Stockton, California, thumped to a 2-2 tally to trail Legarra overall. Giertsen, riding a ] 968 Husqvarna 360, finished third in the first moto, then backed up that performance with a fourth-place finish in moto two to solidify third overall. Dana Salsman (6-3), Rob Poole (5-5) and Shane (4-6) followed. Dorian Sleeper, riding perhaps the cleanest machine at the Regional, a 1967 Husqvarna 360, won the adjoined Classic 500cc Intermediate class while running at near the Expert riders' pace. Sleeper went 1-1 to head BSA rider Dennis Rose, Bultaco jockey Steve Sprague, Jim Cole and Nevada's Harold Hutmiller. Danny Davies beat fellow Golden State resident Gary Davis to the finish for the Premier Open Twin-class win. One of the day's largest classes was the Sportsman 125cc Novice class. Oregon's Josh Warring walloped the competition for a 1-1 win, ahead of Husqvarna rider Dirk Williams, who went 3-2 for second overall. Can-Am-mounted Jeff Anderson trailed Warring in moto one but couldn't duplicate that performance in moto two and went 2-4 for third overall. Dale Stephens and Honda XL 125-mounted Ellen Roebuck filled out the top five overall. In the same race as the 125cc Novice riders were the 125cc Expert and Intermediate contestants, although the pack finished well ahead of their less-experienced comrades. Californian Steve Gibson beat Oregon's Joe Casey for a win in moto one, although Casey came back (Far left) Washington's Jon Wall piloted his Ariel-powered Rickman to the overall win in the Premier 500cc Intennediate class in Madras, Oregon, after also winning the 250Cc Intennediate class on a Yamaha. In the Intermediate class, Honda-mounted Scott Lawson posted a 1 -1 win, ahead of Washington's Mark Collins, who was riding a 1972 CZ 125. Poole, riding a BSA, fended off challenges from Oregon's Bill Row for a win in the Over 50 Expert class to salvage a three-class effort on the day for the rider from Tiburon, California. Canada's Terry Hyde thumped to a 3-3 tally aboard his BSA-powered Rickman to finish third, ahead of Davis' 6-4 finishes and local rider Bill Crager (5-6). CN PREM OPEN TW EX: 1.
