California Racing Club Sponsorship Series Round 2: Los Angeles County R~ceway STORY AND PHOTOS BY GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE,CA,OCT.21 lose to 300 riders converged on the Saddle Glen track at Los Angeles County Raceway for round two of the 13th annual California Racing Club/Galpin Ford/Tru Tec/ Riders' Choice Performance/Factory Effex-backed Sponsorship Series. When the dust finally settled after a full day of racing, 13-year-old Aaron Graham topped 27 other riders for the 125cc Beginner win. Steven Perry made his way to the front of the pack early in moto one to lead Matt Jones, Graham and Jared Whitlaw. Perry's lead lasted a couple of laps before a bobble dropped him back to fourth. Perry's miscue gave Graham a lead he wouldn't relinquish. Jones finished second. Whitlaw was third, a safe distance ahead of Curtis Lacey, Perry and Evan Wilhelm. Perry proved his first-moto start was no fluke as he led Whitlaw, Jones and Graham as moto two got under way. By lap two, Whitlaw was running out front, with Jones dropping Perry back to third. Graham went down and remounted in sixth, behind Tony Sena and Lacey. Whitlaw ran out front until the penultimate lap, when a crash dropped him to 21 st. Graham was picking off a rider per lap and gladly took over the top spot when Whitlaw had problems for a sweep of the field. Sena held off Jones for second. Jones picked up the secondplace trophy. ahead of Lacey (4-4) and Sena (7-2). Scott Howe made his way to the front of the 250cc Intermediate class on the opening lap of moto one and never looked back. Shane Smith and Justin Eide argued over second, with Eide getting the upper hand at the midway point to claim the position for good. Neil Chisholm earned fourth, over Bryon Ward and Jeremy Ferro. Eide snared the moto-two holeshot and led until lap six, when Howe was finally able to make the pass. Howe continued on for the win, over Eide and Smith. Ward (5-6) edged out Donnie Durrer (8-4) for fourth overall. Howe returned to lead every lap of the first 125cc Intermediate moto. The rest of the class played followthe-leader throughout the moto. Eide finished second, ahead of Cody Hertel, Anthony Barbacovi, Dan Roegner and Darin Chisholm. Hertel got the jump on the field in moto two to lead Howe, Steve Colson and Roegner. By lap two, Howe was out front, where he would stay for his fourth moto win of the day. Hertel (3-2) topped Eide (2-3) for second overall. Frankie Mecono (3-3) was third, followed by Nick Mairose and Eide. For the second week in a row, Ricky Parks has proved himself to be the one to beat in the 125cc and 250cc Novice ranks. Parks was nearly perfect in the 125cc class, leading every lap of both motos. Cory Redinius turned in a couple of solid second-place rides, ahead of Kyle Foltz, who slowly worked his way up into a pair of third-place finishes. Parks ran away with the first 250cc Novice moto, over Travis Anway and Redinius. Things were a little tougher for Parks in moto two, as Grant Moore Jr. and Anway took turns running out front. Parks finally wrestled the lead away from Anway on lap five. Moore encountered problems and didn't finish. Redinius came from way back to pick off Anway on the last lap to go 3-2 for second overall. Mike Alessi won all six motos entered to walk away with wins in the 85cc (12-13), Supermini and Schoolboy classes.
