GFI Racing Fall Series South Round 5: Sunrise Cycle Park STORV AND PHOTOS BV GREG ROBERTSON ADElANTO, CA, OCT. 21 vercast skies and cooler temperatures kept the Sunrise Cycle Park track in excellent condition throughout the day as round five of the GFI Racing/Goat Eyewear/Boyesen/ Scott/Fox/FMF/Pro Circuit-sponsored Fall Series invaded the high-desert facility. Trent Pugmire strung together four moto wins to top the aocc Intermediate and Supermini classes, while Juan Diego Saffon split moto wins with Sean Collier for the hard-fought 125cc Intermediate overall honors. Pugmire started things off with a wire-to-wire romp in the first Supermini moto. Kyle Bergantz gated second and kept Dana Dreier and B.J. Bohrer at bay throughout the race to finish in that position. The second moto was more of the same, as Pugmire put the lone Kawasaki in the field out front right from the start and let everyone else fight over second. Dreier settled into second and managed to just stay out of the grasp of Bohrer to go 3-2 for second overall. Bergantz (2-4) was third, followed by Bohrer (4-3) and Cody Madlem (5-5). Pugmire retumed to nail a couple of holeshots aboard his Team Green/Simi Kawasaki/FMF/Dirt Digits-backed KXa5 and then just run away from Bergantz and Bohrer in both aocc Intermediate races. Aaron Bergantz got the holeshot in the first 125cc Intermediate moto, ahead of Garrett Taylor, Micky Griffin, Sean Collier and the rest of the field. On lap three, Collier took over and then controlled the pace for the remaining nine laps of the 20-minute moto. Bergantz finished second. Saffon put in an excellent ride, coming from just inside the top 10 off the start to claim third at the checkers, ahead of Taylor, Sergio Ponce De Leon and Ben Ramsaran. Bergantz led fellow YZ250F pilots Saffon and Taylor out of turn one in moto two to snag the early lead. Saffon dogged Bergantz for two laps before taking over the top spot. Saffon slowly pulled away to earn the overall on a 3-1 score. Taylor, Bergantz, Collier and Griffin engaged in a great battle over second place that lasted for most of the moto. Bergantz prevailed with a last-lap pass on Taylor to go 2-2. Collier (1-4), Taylor (4-3) and Griffin (7-5) rounded out the top five. Josh Bagge led the opening 250cc Intermediate moto for a lap before Collier relieved him of the position and proceeded to inch away for the victory. Griffin climbed up into a second-place finish, over Bagge, Corey Murphy and Matt Hall. Colrunner-up Mark Hall 1346X), Anthony lier was a bit quicker through a Charvette (9), Michael Whiting (33) whoop section and stole the lead, but and the rest of the 125cc Novices Griffin wasn't about to let him get in Adelanto, Callfomla. away and showed him his front fender numerous times during the remainder of the race to make Collier work for the win. Bagge went 3-3 for third, with Hall (5-4) netting fourth. Jonathan Shimp collected firstplace money in the 125cc Pro class after running out front for the entire single 20-minute moto. Tim Weigand put forth a valiant effort but couldn't quite match Shimp's pace and had to settle for second. Cody Knauss and Sean O'Connor argued over third, with O'Connor prevailing. O'Connor returned to earn firstplace payback in the 250cc Pro class aboard his YZ250. O'Connor and Shimp traded the lead back and forth early in the one-shot, 20-minute race before O'Connor got the upper hand for good. Terry Fowler eventually passed Shimp for second, with Weigand and Jimmy Fishback rounding out the top five. Ryan Campbell led every lap of the first 125cc Novice moto for the win but got stuck in traffic in round two, going 1-5 for third overall. A.J. Steinbach finished third to Campbell and Mark Hall in the first outing, then battled with Hall over the lead in the second moto to go 3-1 for the overall on his YZ250f. Bobby Hoerr and Shaun Hillion split moto wins in the 125cc Beginner class, with Hillion coming out on top in the all-important tie-breaking sec- ond moto. Ricky Barber (5-2) was third, over Brock Whitehead (4-6) and Mark Patrazalek (6- 7). KX65-mounted Jeremy McCool cleaned up in the 60cc Beginner ranks with a perfect 1-1 showing and commanding leads in both motos. Cameron Kyler (6-2) edged out Myles Tedder (2-6) for second overall. Jonathan Hornbeck emerged with the aocc Beginner overall honors on a consistent 2-3 tally. Drew Weaver (3-4) earned second, over Curtis Malin Jr. (1-6) and Mark Brewer (6-2). Bill Melanson, on his RM250, has been dominating the Over 40 Novice class throughout this series, and this day was no exception_ Melanson fought his way up from a couple of midpack starts to ace both motos. Jeff Cardone was runner-up both times out, over Allen Grant (3-4) and Jim Bagge (5-3). eN Jeffers (Kaw); 3. Bryce Stewort (Kaw); 4. Marcus Carrillo (Kaw). 60 OPEN: 1. Johnny Jelderda (Kaw); 2.
