Cambridge TT: Perennial Pikes Peak champ Greg Chicoine won the Over 30 and
Open Pro classes In Cambridge, Minnesota.
ing attempt on longtime Expert Eric Brouhard.
As the duo landed off the high-speed jump
and raced into tum one, Thistle looked to the
outside of Brouhard, but he was gently nudged
off the groove by the crafty veteran and soon
found himself off the track and in the weeds.
"This is the only other race I bring my
Pikes Peak bike [a 500cc KX in full DTX trim!
to," explained Chicoine afterward ... , love
coming up here; the track is a lot of fun to ride
on and is always prepared well."
When later asked about the name of his
Kawasaki dealership (Champion Cycle),
Chicoine replied chidingly, "Well, if I came up
here and didn't win, I'd have to go back home
and rename my shop 'Runner-Up Cycle.'"
In the quick-hits department, Cole Fealy
scored the upset of the day by winning the
60cc Mini class over Nicky Mataya. Kevin
Walter and Tanner Renken raced closely in
the Mini Chain division, with Walter eventually
Honda's Dominic DeSimone emerged from
the scrambles to capture the overall crown.
Young Suzuki flash Tanner Krahenbuhl led
the Novices off the line as the first race got
under way. Suzuki-mounted Cameron
Rodriguez muscled his way into the lead, while
DeSimone moved into second. At the end of
lap one, Rodriguez end DeSimone were side
by side, and Patrick Provencher had worked
his Suzuki up into third. Provencher was on a
mission; he reeled in the two leaders, made a
pass on DeSimone, and then took on
Rodriguez for the lead. The white-flag lap was
a bam-bumer, with Provencher, Rodriguez and
DeSimone just inches apart. Rodriguez bobbled a little and fell back into the clutches of
the second pack, leaving Provencher to edge
DeSimone at the wire. Suzuki's Prince
Kapahulehua, Krahenbuhl and Rodriguez
swept through bar to bar for spots three
through five.
DeSimone started the second half ahead of
Kapahulehua, Provencher and the rest of the
Novices. It was Kapahulehua's tum to step up,
as he hung tough in second for the whole
race. DeSimone was not to be denied, however, as he was determined to take this moto
and claim the overall 65cc Novice trophy.
Kapahulehua flashed through the pipes in second but was edged out in the overall by firstmoto winner Provencher, who finished just
behind him in this race. Honda hotshoes
Travis Marx and Tony Caputo rounded out the
top five overall.
scoring the win. Shawn Burr scored a triple
crown by topping the 125cc, 250cc and Open
Amateur classes.

Another standout racer in action on this
Saturday night was Zachary Fussell. In 65cc
Open action, he took on fellow KTM pilot
Kapahulehua, who had raced so well earlier in
the 65cc Novice division. Fussell nailed the
holeshot, with Kapahulehua, Kawasaki rider
Anthony Giulliano and KTM racer Roger Scott
just behind him. Fussell shifted into overdrive
and started to pull away from the pack.
Kapahulehua stayed solid in second, as Scott
and Kawasaki's Derek Rogers were going at it
for third. Fussell kept the heat on and rolled to
win number one. Kapahulehua led Scott and
Rogers through the pipes.
Fussell leaped out in front of moto two,
dragging Kapahulehua, KTM rider Shaun Harrison and Scott around the flrst tum. Fussell
was even faster this time around, and he
immediately shot out to a big lead. Kapahulehua was charging hard in second, way ahead
of a good battle for third between Scott, Harrison and Rogers. Fussell won big - for the second time in a row - to take the 65cc Open
title, while Kapahulehua's two solid seconds
would net him second overall. The next three
racers swapped moto places, with Scott edging out Harrison and Derek Rogers for thlrdplace honors.
