CMC TransCal Series South Round 3: Perris Raceway By JOHN BETHEA PHOTOS BY BILL CLIFTON PERRIS, CA, SEPT. 30 fter several frustrating outings in 4the CMC's White Brothers TransCal Series, the third Southern California round was a positive experience for Michael Young, as he bested fellow four-stroke Yamaha racer Jonathan Shimp in a classic duel in the 125cc Pro class at Perris Raceway. With triple-digit temperatures making the mercury bust through the tops of thermometers, Young's SMP-sponsored machine chased down firstmoto winner Shimp with less than three laps to go and dived underneath him, slamming the door on him in a textbook pass. Shimp appeared to be taken by surprise, as T&S Suzuki jockey Danny Carlson also closed in to force the issue for second place. That confrontation came to a sudden halt just four turns before the white flag when Shimp inexplicably crashed right in front of Carlson and they both tumbled out of contention, giving Honda rider Chris Gosselaar the runner-up spot with a 3-2 overall showing. Gerrit Ordelman, for the second meeting in a row, took third place, over Yamaha-mounted Michael Blose. Carlson and Shimp dropped down to fifth and sixth overall. The spill might have injured Shimp more than was noticeable at first glance, as he failed to start the second 250cc Pro moto five events later. In the first round of this class, Shimp, Young and Carlson had spent nearly the entire race trying to outwit each other as they left the rest of the field adrift in their wake. Carlson had prevailed in that initial battle, with Shimp second and Young eventually slipping off the pace near the end. So, when Shimp skipped the second moto, it left Carlson and Young to dice it out alone, and again it was Young coming from behind late in the moto to catch and pass Carlson. Because of his first-moto third, Young could not wrest the victory away from Carlson, who finished with a 1-2 tally and on top of the results heap for the second weekend in a row. Erik Meyer had cause for celebration, as he not only took both the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes on his Maxxis/IMS Yamahas, but he did it by winning all four motos. In the 125cc clash, he led all 14 laps, with Suzuki-mounted Richard Albach eventually taking second; and in the two 250cc races, Meyer had to come from behind twice to pass early leader Bryan Jaramillo on the Mid- .a (Above) After several frustrating outings, Michael Young turned it around at round three of the CMC TransCal Series South, taking the 125cc Pro victory. The best score is held by 60cc (0-8) Kawasaki jockey Christopher Plouffe, who has a perfect 123 tally after three rounds. Dawn Rogers' victory streak ended at two when Katie Watts took the Women's class. Rogers is still in the points lead, also with 120, after a second-place finish. Two other young lasses also took wins on the day: Brooke Bohanon, riding back-to-back races, . got a victory in the Pee Wee (7-8) class on a Cobra and placed third in the 60cc Beginner on a Kawasaki. while Brittney Rowell won that 60cc Beginner contest on a KTM. eN Perris Raceway Perris, Califomia Results: September 30, 2001 [Round 31 WMf"I: 1. Team Green's Justin Keeney emerged as the top 80cc rider on the day, but it came after a bit of controversy in the first combined 80cc (14-16)/(12-13) combined race. With the older racers leaving the line first, Jarred"Jet" Browne was supposed to go with the second wave, but combined misunderstanding and miscommunication resulted in his leaving with the first gate. His "jumping the start" would not be erased by officials, and even though he came back with a triumph in the second moto, he had to settle for third overall, behind Keeney and Bart Manwill on the MSR Suzuki. In the 80cc (14-16) portion, Andrew Petrie now holds the series points lead after his second victory in as many weeks. Keeney and Browne were joined by Petrie in the Supermini class, and there was no doubt that in this one Keeney was the quickest, as he led nearly every lap in his race over his 14 foes. Browne took second in each outing, and Petrie was third overall with a 5-3 combination. After finishing in second place two times in a row, David Zahrt finally got the overall victory this week in the Old-Timers Masters class, and in the process he joined his two-class-winning brother Jon in the winner's circle. Jon topped the Over 25 Masters and Vet Masters classes. Brett Rothas scored back-to-back moto wins on an FMF Yamaha to ace the 125cc Junior class, the largest field of the day. Brian Anderson, who was the class winner three weeks prior in the opener at Competition Park, holds the series lead, as he took runner-up honors on his EVS Yamaha. Jack Keshersky showed why he's the 125cc Beginner series leader, taking his second win in the series cue •• n e _ 51: • OCTOBER 31, 2001 61
