In the second moto, Austin Reed jumped into the lead after the start, with Braswell, Clark and Weldon following_ Braswell took the lead early, passing Reed and setting the pace. Weldon worked his way up into the second and Clark took over third. Clark began to pressure Weldon at halfway but was never close enough to make a move. At the finish, Braswell had gone 1-1 to protect his lead and came up champion. Weldon finished an impressive second, keeping the race close to the end. The first Over 40 moto featured a drag race all the way to the first tum between Bruce Frey and Vernon Patterson. Frey took the lead and Patterson dropped into second, with Dan Scheffler anxiously trying to get by Patterson. He tried to do so on the first lap in the whoops but Patterson held off the Honda rider. Frey led the field as the first lap ended, and Scheffler was now in second and charging_ Patterson had his hands full with Danny Wilburn, who was a close fourth, ahead of Mike Tilotta. Wilburn passed Patterson for third on the second lap and set out after the leaders. David Kocich was on the move, passing Tilotta on the third lap and going after Patterson. Patterson, Kocich and Tilotta circulated the track with the white flag out. Kocich passed Patterson with only a few turns remaining, and at the finish it was Frey ahead of Scheffler, Wilburn taking third, and Kocich edging out Patterson for fourth. Danny Wilburn took the moto-two holeshot, with Scheffler in hot pursuit. Scheffler took the lead before the end of the first lap. Patterson and Tilotta were third and fourth, respectively, being chased by first-moto winner Frey, who passed TiJotta and Patterson on the second lap and went after Wilburn_ As the race wound down, Frey was the man to watch. He passed Wilburn on the last lap and had only Scheffler left_ It became evident that the race was going all the way to the checkers_ Frey made it close but came up short; Scheffler took the win and the overall via a 2-1 tally, over Frey. AMA Fall Classic Four-Stroke Nationals Round 2: Birch Creek Motorsports Parle Smith Reigns! Bv JAV HAUSER DANVIllE, VA, SEPT. 16 s the reigning Fall Classic FourStroke National champ, Kelly Smith wears his number-one crown well. Hailing from Ludington, Michigan, and armed with a very potent factory KTM 520, Smith laid down the law at the second round of the series with a commanding doublemoto sweep, proving he is still the king of this series. Everyone in the country knows that this was a particularly tough weekend to go racing, in light of the recent events around the country, but as they say, "The show must go on" and that's what 38 strong racers from 13 states did at Birch Creek Motorsports Park. With a great track in perfect condition and many top fourstroke pilots on hand, the racing was fantastic and tight. Last year's event winner, Clark Stiles, came up from Alabama and gave Smith a run for his money, as did local hero Kevin Walker, coming off two championships this year alone at Loretta Lynn's. Georgia's Matt Walker (no relation to Kevin) was on the gas and was showing major speed, running up front in the first moto. Matt's day soon turned sour, as a hard fall in another class put him out for the day. When the gate dropped for the first moto, 38 four-bangers charged up the long Birch Creek start with Smith at the head of the field on his strong KTM 520, followed by the two Walkers. KTM rider Brian Mason from 1I1i- A nois fought off Stiles to stay in the top five in the early going. Smith quickly made it apparent that this was going to be a tough moto as he set a blazing-fast pace. The two Yamahamounted Walkers were in their own battle, but their duel kept them nipping at Smith's rear fender well past halfway through the moto. As the moto wore down, Matt Walker was finally in charge of second position and putting major heat on Smith, but Smith never faltered. When the white flag was shown to Smith, he looked so strong that he probably could have gone another 10 laps, and he recorded his first moto win of the day. Kevin Walker never really lost sight of the lead pair and rode in for a third. Stiles quietly rode the entire moto in fourth and finished there. Mason, meanwhile, had to fight for fifth the whole moto with arenacrossregular Jeff Gibson, Michael Campbell and yet another local rider who had worked his way up toward the front, Mark Wagner. In the end, Mason held on to his top-five run. Campbell moved into sixth, over Wagner and Gibson. Matt Walker very likely could have had something for Smith in moto two, but he was unable to make the next gate. A crash while running near the front of the 250cc Pro Fall Classic put the hard charger from Georgia out, so his final score was 2-DNS for 33rd. Moto two of the Four-Stroke National was a repeat at the start, as Smith nailed down another perfect holeshot. Gibson pulled a better shot out of the gate this time around and Birch Creek Motorsports Parte Kelly Smith (1) nails down the second-moto holeshot over Jeff Gibson (275), Clark Stiles (behind Smith), Kevin Walker (859) and the rest of the pack at round two of the AMA Fall Classic Four-Stroke Nationals In Danville, Virginia. Smith won both motes_
