Senior Vet and Vintage Nationals High Point Raceway Winslow Hits Two Homers By CARL DAVIS MOUNT MORRIS, PA, SEPT. 15 reg Winslow from Perryopolis, Pennsylvania, left his mark on Mount Morris on a beautiful fall day as he joined in on the fun at the Senior Vet and Vintage Nationals, held on the always demanding High Point Raceway national track. Winslow took wins in the Four-Stroke and Vintage Pre-1990 classes. Meanwhile, Michael Winslow battled hard all day in the Over 25 A and Over 30 A classes. More than 300 Vet riders from many states showed up to battle some old rivals and have a lot of fun and face some tough competition. While many riders were there just for fun, a few were there in preparations for the World Vets in California, and they were pushing hard. The first Over 25 A moto provided lots of excitement and kind of set the stage for the day's top competitors, as many National-caliber riders took on the immaculately prepared, hilly circuit. Ohio's David Hand held the early lead at the start of moto one, with a pack of 10 riders following in formation for the first four of seven laps. Jim Jarrett jammed his way to the front and settled in behind Hand, with Shane Lawson, Mark Kane, GayIon Dickson and Michael Winslow all riding superhard for position. Jarrett was all over Hand in the final laps, and with a slick inside move through the chicane first-turn area, he took over the lead and held on for a hardearned win. Lawson put in a strong ride for third. In moto two, another Ohio rider, Ron Boyas, absconded with the early lead and was looking very smooth out front, pulling a slight lead over the pack, while Hand had hit the deck and was running way back. Jarrett was on the move again, and he jammed his way past Boyas, with Lawson in tow. Stephen Crowe was on the gas and running gun to gun with Winslow for a top-five moto finish. At the checkered flag, it was Jarrett with the win and the overall, with Lawson taking second and second G overall. Hand recovered for eighth in the moto and third overall. Winslow earned fourth overall, and Mike Morgan rounded out the top five. Rob McClain has "three-peated" his performances in the Over 30 B and Vintage Pre-1985 classes. For the third straight year, McClain has taken double-class wins back to Lagrange, Ohio. In the Over 30 B class, McClain had his hands full with Louis Ali, who took the first-moto win, and it was a down-to-the-wire battle in moto two, with McClain pulling out the victory. In the Vintage Pre-1985 class, McClain had old Vintage rival Dave Blauman to contend with. Blauman took the moto-one win. McClain seemed to save his best for the second moto and was rock solid, taking the overall win. Greg Winslow was another doubleclass winner, taking the Four-Stroke win over Cody Skinner and Jeff Fenton and winning the Vintage Pre-1990 class over Paul Frey and David Papi. J.K. Miller was feeling good, taking home two Vet titles. Miller smoked to the Over 50 class win, over Skip Stewart, and he gunned down the younger guys in the Over 40 C class for a great win. eN High Point Il8ceway Mouat Morris, ....asylvu.. Bunner made short work of the field, taking third from Marek on the next lap. Setting a fast pace, Kevin and Bunner moved toward the front until the last lap. With the white flag out and half a track left, Kevin suffered more bike problems, forcing him out of the running. This moved Bunner into a hardfought second, behind Jason Lovell, who took the win and the series title for the class. Bunner's 3-2 was good for second overall, edging out Kevin Lovell for the final position. The 51 cc (7-8) class had a battle for the title going all the way down to the wire. Cody Braswell only led second-placed Krae Weldon by three points coming into the final two motos of the series. In the first moto, Braswell was in the lead, ahead of Trevan Clark and then Weldon, who made his move on Clark before the whoops and was ready to wage war on Braswell. Carson Wieland had moved into third, ahead of Dustin Fowler. Braswell was trying to lose Weldon early, pulling away just a little from the secondplaced rider. Landon Matthews passed Wieland on the second lap to take over fifth. When the white flag By BRIAN COMEAU WALLER, TX, SEPT. 15 90 MX was the site of the last round of the STC Stubbs Cycle Stars Over Texas Night Series. Some classes were pretty much wrapped up, with obvious winners and positions. Other classes were fighting all the way down to the wire, making for an exciting evening. Kevin Lovell nailed the first 250cc Intermediate start on his Suzuki, with his brother Jason in second. Chris Marek was in third, being trailed by Scott Bunner, who came from the back to the front in a excellent ride. With the white flag out and Kevin Lovell with a lead over Jason Lovell, the only race on the track was for third, and Bunner and Marek were in full swing. Bunner made his move with time to spare, finishing out the moto in third. In the second moto, Jason took the holeshot, with Marek in second. Kevin, who had bike trouble and had switched to a loaner, sat in third. Bunner once again found himself having to come from far back. Kevin began to find catch fire, passing Marek on the second lap, with Bunner 2 cue I • n • _ os • OCTOBER 31,2001 73
