Florida Gold Cup Series Round 4: Hardrock Cycle Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY CRAIG JOHNSON AND ANGELA HARDEN OCAlA, FL, OCT. 7 he American flag flew high for the fourth round of the Florida Gold Cup Series, presented by Unlimited Sports, at Hardrock Cycle Park. Drew Justice, a new winner, prevailed over many strong riders in the Over 40 class, and a strong showing in the Over 35 class - 5-3 moto finishes for fourth overall - was also something to be proud of. The day was cloudy and overcast, with occasional drizzle and rain. The temperature topped out around 80. The track lived up to its name, as in the riders had better have hard-track tires. Some 294 riders turned out for the event. Willis Brock grabbed the first Over 40 holeshot; followed by Lenard Leggett, Justice, Robert Armstrong and Vincente Duque. Justice grabbed second going into Gravity Cavity and first going over the water-tower jump. Justice never looked back and went on to a convincing moto win. Brock and Leggett remained second and third. Kevin Wilson moved through the pack to take fourth by the end, over Duque. The second moto was all Justice, again. Brock took home second, and Armstrong powered his way to third. Wilson beat out Leggett for fourth. Byran Johnson made an appearance and controlled the 125cc Youth and 125cc B classes, taking all four moto wins. In the first 125cc Youth moto, Johnson was out front, with Kyle Williamson, Ryan Warren, Shaun Skinner and Jon Camp following. Johnson pulled out and made it look easy. In the second moto, Johnson won again. Williamson put the pressure on Warren and got the second spot. Skinner wound up fourth and Dale Kump was fifth. Colten Maynard came out the winner in the first 85cc (7-11) moto, though not without a tight battle with Dean Dyess. Maynard led with Shawn Weech, Dyess, Nicholas McPhee and Donald Solley close behind. Dyess got around Weech and the battle started with Maynard. Dyess got around Maynard at the halfway mark, but Maynard set up Dyess at the step-up before going into the back section and regained the lead. Before they ended the lap, Dyess was back in the lead. Maynard set Dyess up in the same spot on the last lap and made the pass stick to take the moto win. Weech, Solley and McPhee rounded out the top five. T In the second moto, Dyess was ready for more. Dyess pulled out the win over Maynard, as Solley found his way around Weech. Troy Davis found himself in fifth. A battle erupted in the first Supermini moto. Matt Boni led Matt Goerke until the last lap. Goerke glued himself to Boni's rear fender the whole Shawn Mayo collected his first overall win of the series, in the 16-24 class. Quinton Bigalow won the first moto, followed by William Studstill, Eric Stewart, Mayo and Ronnie Monk. In the second moto, Mayo had to get around Over 25 rider Steve Dumond; when he did, Mayo never looked back to take a big win and tighten up the points race. Dumond pulled the holeshot, then lost it to Mayo. On the second lap, Mayo leaped farther down the water-tower jump to take the lead. Dumond fell at the finishline corner and the 16/24 riders filed by. Stewart, Tim Bantle, Bigalow, Monk and Studstill filled the top six positions. Studstill moved to fifth, and the order was set. Mayo's 4-1 score beat out Stewart's 3-2 tally and Bigalow's 1-4 finishes.
