Arrowhead Speedway season Finale Arrowhead Speedway South Carolina Motorsports Park: In Kershaw, South Carolina, David Matthews took his Ted Hubbard-prepared BSA single to his second straight win in Heavyweight Classic to take the lead in the Southeast Regional Championship Series. WERA Vintage Road Racing Round 19: Soutll Carolina Motorsports Park Rutherford Roars to the Front By STEVE STASER KERSHAW,SC, SEPT. 9 avid Rutherford recorded his second win in a row on his Ted Hubbard-prepared BSA 500cc single to take the Southeast Regional Championship points lead over teammate David Matthews. Hubbard, a former BSA factory wrench in the 1~60s and '70s, was the tuner on Dick Mann's BSA that won Daytona in 1970. Rutherford, an Atlanta lawyer, had to come from behind in the race to take the win, and he took a 20-point lead in the series with only one more round, in Savannah, Georgia. Mick McDaniel, also BSA-mounted, took second, with Natalie Wells bringing her Royal Enfield 500 home third. Matthews had the hard-luck story of the day, as he blew a transmission on the start. Richard Lucas, who traveled all the way down from Maryland, took his Team RD Yamaha to the win in formula RD after a fine battle with Chris Stevenson from the Vintage Specialists stable. Lyn Garland, the chief of that team, brought home third. The second vintage race of the day featured a rematch of the battle between Team Steve-a's teammates Eric Cook and Harold Page. Page won the last bout in Talladega by half a bike length after a very close race all the way. The drama fizzled out as Page's Honda had wiring problems on the warm-up lap and couldn't report to the grid. Cook coasted to the win, over John Early and Nathan McManhas. 80 OCTOBER 24, 200t • c u e I D The Formula 500 race saw Mark Morrow take his MRA Racing RD350 to the win over Phillip Bush and his Import Machine 400 four-cylinder Honda after a good battle. Lucas took a distant third. In Mediumweight Classic competition, Crockett Racing's Steven Mahanes brought his beautifu1350cc Ducati home first, over Cycle Specialties of Athens' Doug Bowie. Cook repeated his Vintage One feat as he ran away with the Vintage Two contest, over Brenda Bush and Early. The Vintage Four race, which usually features the classic match-up of Tim Joyce and "Fast" Frank Shockley, had less pizzazz, as Shockley had broken his Triumph at Talladega and couldn't get it ready for this race. Thanks to his friend John Rickard, who loaned Shockley his RD Yamaha, he could keep his points going. Joyce and Team Steve-a's Mark Nadelkov took off and tried to leave the field, but Bowie wouldn't have any part of it, and he reeled in Nadelkov by lap two. On lap three, in turn 1 1, Nadelkov shot right off the track after he threw a chain. Joyce opened up his lead and won by 20 lengths over Bowie and the Narrow Focus SR500 thumper of John Stauber. Shockley held his own on the little two-stroke, as he took fourth and kept his points race alive. MRA's Rick Guirey took Formula Two-Stroke honors over the Governors Bridge Motorcycles TC500 _ Yamaha _ Charles Rudesyle. n of _ :IS Fisher King of Arrow-head Speedw-ay By ELAINE JONES SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 12 T he season's final night at Arrowhead Speedway was a somber one, as spectators and riders took time to pay homage to the lives lost in the terrible plane crashes in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. It was a moving moment for all in attendance. The program was a simple one: five rounds of Scratch racing; the rider earning the most points is the winner. It was won by the young man from Norco, Ryan Fisher, and it came down to the final race of the night. Fisher started things off by winning the first ride of the night. Bobby Krips took the win in the second heat, and Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz was the man in the third heat. Scott Brant threw his hat into the ring by taking the final race of the first round. Brant got things going in round two, making it two for two for the man who doesn't look like he was ever retired for several years. Dukie Ermolenko got on track, taking the win in the second heat. Schwartz was keeping pace with Brant and put another great ride in the books as he won the third heat. Fisher was not about to let anyone get ahead of him, and it was win number two for him as he closed out the second round of racing. Three riders had perfect scores: Brant, Schwartz and Fisher. "Boogaloo· held class as he started the third round off with a win. Ermolenko put another win under his belt, and he was starting to look like a real threat. After two second-place finishes, Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell found his groove and was not far off the lead with two more rounds to go. Fisher and Brant met in the final heat. and Fisher got the best of it, and with three rounds down, Fisher and Schwartz were tied for first. with Brant one point back. Arrowhead Speedway: Ryan Fisher leads Bobby Schwartz In the final race of the night in San Bernardino, California, to clinch the championship.
