AMA District 27 Motocross Series Round 6: Washougal Motocross Park STORV AND PHOTOS BV CLAV LIGHT WASHOUGAL, WA, SEPT. 9 awasaki Team Green/Pro Circuitbacked Mike Corder cashed in at the penultimate race of the AMA District 27 Motocross Series with a fourmoto sweep at Washougal Motocross Park in Washington. Corder collected overall wins in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes to join a host of doubleclass winners, including Yamaha's Ryan Villopoto, KX pilot Shawn Haberlock, and Honda rider Joey Mancuso. Along with fellow Washingtonian Josh Hill, Villopoto has dominated the 80cc and Supermini classes this season, but on this day, ,in Hill's absence, it was all Villopoto. The rider from Poulsbo won two classes, first handing the field of 80cc (12-15) riders defeat. Haberlock has progressed through the ranks and is now one of the few on the West Coast that can challenge Villopoto or Hill. Haberlock took advantage of ViIlopoto's poor starts and became one of the few riders to beat the highly heralded Yamaha rider this season, although both riders were in separate classes, as Villopoto contested the elder (12-15) age division. Haberlock got off the line in command and remained there to post a win in the 80cc (7-11) class, leading Villopoto in both motos after Villopoto came from well behind. Haberlock's win in the 80cc (7 -11) class came ahead of fellow Oregonian Taylor McKee and Washington's Jacob Kannada. ViIlopoto's (12-15) win came in front of local rider J.J. Neimi and Oregon's Jesse Wuori. Things went much better for Villopoto in the Supermini (12-15) class, as the YZ speedster got much better starts in the two motos and decimated the competition. Haberlock was Villopoto's closest competition, finishing second, again topping the younger of the two divisions, the Supermini (9-11) class. finishing second and third place overall in the Supermini (12-15) class were Neimi and Kawasaki rider Ajay Olinger. Trailing Haberlock were McKee and Kannada. Corder darted out front at the unleashing of the first 125cc Pro moto, followed by rookie Pros Rory Sullivan and Tyler Fick. Sullivan had his sights on Corder but fell while running second. This moved up Fick into the position - where he'd remain, trailing Corder at moto's end. Huffman took the lead on lap two, but Huffman's lead would be as brief as Bisceglia's, as by lap three Corder had taken the lead after tangling with the fast-starting Huffman. Metzler stead}ly progressed through the field and displaced both Bisceglia and Huffman to move into second late in the moto. Corder capped off his perfect four-for-four win tally (earning him his second overall win), while Metzler, Bisceglia, Sullivan and Jason Matthews followed. Bisceglia (3-3) and Sullivan (2-4) filled out the podium positions. Mancuso was again trailed by Blanchard in both 250cc B motos. Tye Crandall (4-3), Scott Sherrell (5-5) and Jay Jackson (7-6) rounded out the top five overall. Former AMA 500cc National Champion Rick Burgett made a rare appearance in the Over 40 A class, but it was Darryl Zumstein winning overall. Burgett trailed Zumstein in the early stages of moto one but finished third to Zumstein and David Taxel at the finish. Burgett didn't start moto two, which was again won by Zumstein. Metzler put his Suzuki out front at the start of moto two but could only hold the lead for one lap. Corder carved past the second-year Pro and held the lead from that point to the finish, earning the top overall payoff with a 1-1 score. Sullivan progressed through the field to overtake Metzler midway through the moto and finish second to Corder, good for second overall with a 4-2 tally. Metzler (3-3), Fick (2-4) and Carter (5-5) were the top five fmishers overall. In the combined 125cc B class, Mancuso was a two-moto winner, holding off the advances from local Kawasaki rider Todd Blanchard to garner his first of two overall wins on the day. Blanchard went 2-2 for second overall, while Bryan Thibedeau's 4-3 placings earned the rider from Ridgefield, Washington, third overali. Oregon's Ryan Huffman pulled the trigger fastest to lead the first 250cc Pro moto, and the former factorysupported rider remained there for I e n e _ s much of the moto. With less than two laps remaining, though, Huffman dropped off the pace due to severe arm pump. This handed the lead to Corder, who stayed there for the remainder for the win.
