K&N Filters Del Mar Motorcycle Weekend Concours d' Elegance and Motorcycle Expo STORY AND PHOTOS BY DOUG KARCHER DEL MAR, CA, OCT. 6 Motorcycle enthusiasts from all {tv\j walks converged on the expansive Del Mar Fairgrounds facility once again for the Del Mar Motorcycle Weekend. The main attraction was two full days of National Championship Dirt Track racing, but for many, the highlight of the weekend was the custom and vintage bike show known as the Concours d' Elegance. Behind the main clubhouse at the Mile track, arranged in and around the beautifully manicured landscaping of the interior courtyards, owners and restorers of vintage and custom motorcycles brought the fruits of their labors to be displayed alongside others and to be judged. Riders and enthusiasts alike came to see and to get close to their favorite motorcycle or to possibly get a glimpse of a rare machine. Seeing that row of Huskys, each one perfect with red tanks and that signature chrome panel, brought back memories of rolling that same bike out of the dealership or winning 36 OCTOBER 24. 2001 • cue that first desert race. A beautifully restored Harley reminded one of an old family photo showing a father or grandfather astride a similar bike. Standing in front of a Vincent Black Lightning, it was hard not to close your eyes and dream of taking it out for Sunday morning rides down Pacific Coast Highway. A few dozen yards from the Mile track, where Vintage riders were speeding clown the main straight at more than 100 mph, people strolled slowly, taking in the view, stopping at times to talk with the owner of a particular motorcycle, sharing stories about the countless hours spent restoring it or asking where they might find parts for a similar project. These were motorcycles that most people only get to see in books and magazines, one-of-a-kind and championship-winning bikes and some that many had never heard of. Outside of the Concours, the Motorcycle Expo featured major and aftermarket manufacturers, vendors and owners clubs (such as Ariel and Vincent). Motorcycle artist Harry Miller displayed and sold his work. Six-time AMA National Trials Chamn e _ !IS I e pion Geoff Aaron performed demonstrations of his trials skills, and Freestyle MX exhibitions thrilled spectators with daring aerial maneuvers. Inside the exhibition hall at the swap meet, you might find that rare issue of Cycle Magazine that you've been looking for, or a part for that bike you're restoring.
