Horton held on for most of a lap until breaking as he exited turn four on the second lap, leaving Eric Bland, Frank Hardman, Mickey Green and Steve Miller to chase Johnson's '67 Triumph, which blew up just as he crossed the line for the win. C&J Racing Frames sponsored the Vet A class, in which Jeff Johnson got off the line quickest. But it was Steve Fortune- who made to turn one first, followed by Travis Petton. They ran side by side down the back straight, followed by Fortune, Jeff Leslie and Dante D'Ambrouso. Fortune drafted Petton on the back straight and Dante went around Leslie on four. Johnson took over the lead again and held on for the win on his '67 Triumph 750 with a 20-bikelength lead over Fortune, Petton, Dante and Leslie. In the Vet B class by Nesbit Insurance, Robert Hansen got the holeshot, followed by Joe Steffen, who took over on the back straight, trailed by Dennis Cameron and Ruben Malaguarnero. Malaguarnero moved his XR750 into second in turn one lap two and first in turn three of that lap. Steet came from the back to take third, behind Steffen. Brown's Cycles and Shelly Ward Enterprises sponsored the Classic 250 (Pre-1967, no brakes) and 500· (overhead-valve singles and 750cc side-valve pre-1967, no brakes) classes, which were run at the same time. Chris Rudy got the holeshot but was quickly passed by Atherton on a 1956 BSA Gold Star (whichhe bought new and raced as a junior Pro), followed by Dave Miller, Eugene Smith, Chris Apple and Jim McMurren, on a 250cc Harley. Apple worked his way up to third but broke on the last lap. Atherton won it with a half-straightaway lead over Rudy and Miller. The Modern 250cc and 250cc Open mains were presented by Oregon Cascade Water. John Lundgren was first to turn one, followed by Woody Carlson. Jim Rosa got around ILefQ Speedway racer Eddie Castro appeared to be right at home aboard this 1920s..ra board-tracker that he used to win the class of the same name. Carlson there and began closing on Lundgren. Lundgren did what he could to hold him off before breaking in turn four, handing the Modern 250cc win to Rosa. In the Open 250cc contest, De Wayne Jones took over from Carlson with Brad Rudy, Chuck Claydon Jr. and Mark Lyons. Carlson reclaimed the lead spot from Jones in three and four for the win in the 250cc Open, followed across the line by Jones, with Rudy in third position. In the Bartels' Harley-Davidson Modern 500cc class, Rob Nolin got the holeshot, over Lundgren and Jim Monegan. Monegan moved into second on the back straight, passing Nolin in three and four for the win. Jim Holley and Terry Graham rounded out the top four. Bob Gerberich finished seventh on a '72 500cc twin Honda that he towed out from Ohio behind his Gold Wing. The Berkeley Yamaha/JRC Engineering Modern 750cc A event got started with Adam Sabedra taking the holeshot over Marty Lewis and Jim Ottele. Jeff Johnson made his move The Rod Lake Racing 500cc Support class saw Joe Steffen, on his '75 Trackmaster 500cc Yamaha, get the holeshot. Keith Bradford took over in turns three and four, with Steet third, Fox fourth and McCoy fifth. Steffen took lead back going into three and never gave it back. Steet finished third and McCoy got Fox for fourth It was "run what ya' brung" in the Saddleman and The Shop Open Amateur class. Rod Reed got the holeshot, over Steve Forturn, with D'Ambrouso and Jim Kessler close behind. Kessler overtook D'Ambrouso for third. Forturn held the lead, with Kessler and D'Ambrouso side by side and Rob Reed trying hard to get past both of them. Kessler took over second going into two. Reed tried to get around D'Ambrouso on the back straight, but D'Ambrouso held him off. Though he was gaining at the end, Kessler ran out of time to catch Forturn's 2000 Wood Rotax 665. D'Ambrouso was third and Reed finished fourth. eN up the back side on the back straight to take over second. As they came down the front, it was Johnson, Leslie Herman, Ottele and Steve Miller. Herman took second away from Leslie, followed by Miller and Sabedra, and then went after Johnson. With Miller and Sabedra fighting for third, Leslie dropped to fifth. Herman drafted Johnson, and Sabedra and Leslie took Miller. On the white--f1ag lap, Herman went inside Johnson going through turn three and they ran side by side through four. Coming out of four, it was Herman's '71 stock-frame Triumph 750 in the lead all the way to the flag, as Johnson just couldn't pull off the draft pass. Sabedra, Leslie and Miller rounded out the top five. Works Performance Suspension presented the Modern 750cc B final. Horton led off the line with Malaguarnero and Bob Graves behind. Graves took over second in turn two. Dick Slusher went around Malaguarnero and Graves for second. Horton took the win on a '74 750cc Yamaha with a big lead over Slusher, Graves, Malaguarnero and Brown. Del Mar Fairgrounds oal Mar Mile Results: lJc:tIIber 6, ZODl SR: 1. DllVid Atherton; 2.
