Bv CLAV LIGHT PHOTOS BV CLAV LIGHT AND ERIC SCHULTHEISS ALBANY, OR, SEPT. 8-9 amaha-mounted Herb's Cycletown teammates Tony Graves and Jesse Bath have spent several of the 10 rounds thus far in the CMC Northwest Summer Motocross Series going wheel to wheel in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, and at the second half of the weekend doubleheader in Albany, it was much the same. Graves and Bath split moto wins on Sunday, with Graves topping the 125cc class and Bath besting Graves in 250cc action. On Saturday, Bath had tough competition from Yamaha-mounted Washingtonian Garhett Carter. Bath and Carter exchanged moto wins in the 125cc Pro class - which was finalized in Carter's favor - with Bath reversing the order in the 250cc Pro class to snare an overall win. Bath would then add his Sunday victory in the 250cc Pro class for a sweep of the weekend in the class in what was only his second race b,!ck from a badly broken foot. KTM-mounted Pete Sannan was one of the top performers this weekend, posting 125cc Junior and Before The Hill Junior-class overall victories on both days, via 1-1 placings in each. Sannan's Saturday rampage started off with his win in the Before The Hill Junior class, topping Yamaha-mounted Heath Voegele (3-2) and Honda rider Nick Randklev (2-3). Sannan stormed back to do likewise in the 125cc Junior class, where he again led Randklev (2-2) and Voegele (4-3) into the top three overall. Ryan Huege and Ryan Thompson battled all weekend long in the 125cc Intermediate and Before The Hill intermediate classes, but each scored an tt overall win on Saturday. The duo traded wins in the 125cc class . which went in Huege's favor· but in the Before The Hill class, it was all Thompson, as Huege suffered from poor starts and couldn't narrow the gap, finishing 3-2 for second overall, ahead of Yama· ha rider Matt Williams (2-3). Both Sannan and Thompson were equally as impressive on Sunday. Sannan devoured the competition in his second double-class demolition of the weekend. The Gran Prix Cycles/Sinisalo-backed Sannan put huge ground on the competition in taking his 125cc Junior and Before The Hill Junior wins. The 16-year·old Thompson from Southern Oregon enjoyed what was most likely his best day of racing yet, getting the holeshot in both combined 125cc Pro/Intermediate motos and fending off top Oregon Professionals Graves and Bath for many laps before yielding. Thompson stayed close to the leaders to the fmish; Graves narrowly edged Bath for a Pro-class win, while Thompson posted the Intermediate-class win, ahead of Huege, who again suffered from poor starts. The Honda-mounted Thompson, a relative newcomer to the Intermediate ranks, held the lead for two laps in moto two, but both Graves and Bath overtook the up-and-coming teen to hold the top two positions. Jeremy Mclain (Yam). went down the tubes when he developed a flat rear tire on the final lap and finished a distant second, barely edging Thompson at the finish. Graves and Bath were at it again in the 250cc Pro class. Graves and Bath staged another close swapfest for the lead, but when the two hit lapped riders late in the moto, Graves broke free from Bath to score a narrow win. Graves led the first three laps of moto two, but after that it was Bath's moment to shine. Bath fended off all of Graves' challenges to win overall with a 2-1 tally, ahead of Graves (1-2). Trailing the Pro duo was the top-placing Intermediate rider, Jon Kauffman, who topped both motos, ahead of Yamaha rider Gerritt Schaffer and Sean Connaghan. Former Alaska State Champion Jeff MacDonald rode his new Suzuki RM250 to a 1-1 win in the Over 40 Pro class. MacDonald turned two good starts into two winning performances to collect the top payoff, ahead of Kawasaki rider Randy Tuller (3-2). Honda-mounted Joe Casey (2-3) finished third, followed by Suzuki pilot Dean Johnson (5-4) and CR500 rider Chris Alberts (4-5) in one of the largest assemblies of Over 40 riders thus far in the series. eN Albany Motorsports Park Albeay, Ongon Results: September 8-9, 2001 (Round 10 of 121 Saturday WMN: I.
