THQ/LXD Freeride Mota X Tour Winter X Qualifier Nashville Auditorium By JOEY CASEY/ PRACTICE TRACK MAGAZINE NASHVILlE, TN, OCT. 5-6 " he Rock" Rourke unveiled a new trick Friday night in Nashville to not only earn himself a spot in the Winter X-Games but also to win two of the weekend's six different freestyle divisions. Both he and Nate Adams introduced the doublegrab-to-double-nothing, in which each of these two sickos completely let go of the bike while doing double seat-grab Supermans before regaining hold of the seat and then climbing back aboard the bike. When this trick is extended well, it looks like the rider has hucked himself too far from the bike to get back on. With that move, backed up by a one-handed Hart Attack for his next trick, Rourke won the Big Air (best trick) competition on Friday. He backed that up with a win in Freestyle just a few moments later. His worst finish of the weekend in Freestyle and Big Air was a fourth place, which came in Saturday's Freestyle finale, and even then, Rourke lost by less than two points. After Rourke and Adams, Metal Mulisha's Justin Homan was the next rider to bust a new move, and his may have been the craziest one yet. Homan used a bungee cord, which looked like a dead man's switch, to connect him and the bike. Once in the air, Homan floated above his bike to fly in a Superman formation. How strong was the cord? Apparently not strong enough, because it did come apart once; luckily, it was after Homan's run, when he laid his bike down to do his victory dance - waving his arms, motioning for everybody to get up out of their seats and give him some well-deserved love. Sure enough, when the scores were tallied, Homan's holy-man stunt had scored him the win in Saturday night's Big Air contest. It was a stunning trick performed by a rider who is back in top form paralyzing injuries suffered two years ago. today, Homan still rides with a paralyzed foot. "I am really grateful to my sponsors like SMP, who have stuck behind me even though everyone thought it was over," said Homan about his remarkable comeback victory following nine months of being bedridden. With so many divisions, and two nights of competition, there was no set overall winner for the weekend, but if there were, Adams would have definitely been on Rourke's heels. When Adams puts a good run togeth- 56 OCTOBER 24,2001 • cue er, he extends every trick and brings them down textbook-style. On both nights in Freestyle, he did just that, picking up another win (his first in WFA-sanctioned competition, and his first in front of the ESPN cameras) in Saturday night's Freestyle final. Adams missed the win in Freestyle on Friday by only three-tenths of a point.
