K&N Filters Del Mar Motorcycle Weekend Concours d' Elegance and Motorcycle Expo STORY AND PHOTOS BY DOUG KARCHER DEL MAR, CA, OCT. 6 Motorcycle enthusiasts from all {tv\j walks converged on the expansive Del Mar Fairgrounds facility once again for the Del Mar Motorcycle Weekend. The main attraction was two full days of National Championship Dirt Track racing, but for many, the highlight of the weekend was the custom and vintage bike show known as the Concours d' Elegance. Behind the main clubhouse at the Mile track, arranged in and around the beautifully manicured landscaping of the interior courtyards, owners and restorers of vintage and custom motorcycles brought the fruits of their labors to be displayed alongside others and to be judged. Riders and enthusiasts alike came to see and to get close to their favorite motorcycle or to possibly get a glimpse of a rare machine. Seeing that row of Huskys, each one perfect with red tanks and that signature chrome panel, brought back memories of rolling that same bike out of the dealership or winning 36 OCTOBER 24. 2001 • cue that first desert race. Outside of the Concours, the Motorcycle Expo featured major and aftermarket manufacturers, vendors and owners clubs (such as Ariel and Vincent). Motorcycle artist Harry Miller displayed and sold his work.
