:I: Path Valley Short Track Path Valley Speedway U w w a: '" z ~ Mellinger Makes the Most of It Baer started third in the Over 30 final, behind Sweeten and Bill Bromley but in front of Tom Norton and Joe Bromley. He put his Battlefield H-D/ Baer Racing Products-sponsored Rotax on the high line and gradually edged his way past Bromley and then Sweeten, taking the lead on the fourth lap. Steve Heiser was quickest off the Over 40 line, leading John Winsett Sr., Jim Chapman and Bruce Miller. Winsett went to the far outside line on his track, putting his Two Wheel Productions/Path Valley Speedwaysponsored Rotax into the lead at the end of the second lap. Riding the best in a few months, Chapman took second on the following lap, with Miller dropping Heiser another spot on the next lap. Mike Headman led the 600cc B class, closely pursued by Sennett, MacDowell and Norton. Sennett took the lead at the end of the third lap, with MacDowell second the following lap. MacDowell began to cut into the large margin Sennett had built. Sennett bobbled slightly off the fourth turn heading for the flag, and MacDowell just barely won by a foot. Youth double-class winners included Bailey Spence, who was the victor in the 50cc (4-6) and 50cc Oil-Injected classes on his Miller's Cyclessponsored machines; Austin Greenland, who led the 65cc and 85cc classes wire to wire; and John Lewis, who easily beat the 125cc and 250 B classes, taking the lead at the end of the first lap in both. Bv LEN BREECH SPRING RUN, PA, SEPT.! ich Mellinger was one of only three class winners at Path Valley's September short-track event to win only once. He had a hard-fought, side-by-side battle with Chris Klinefelter to win the 250cc A class, as Lexus of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, put up an additional $100 for the class winner. Other single-class winners included track owner John Winsett Sr., who again won the Over 40 contest, and Doug MacDowell, who just edged Travis Sennett at the line for the 600cc B win. The 2001 AMA Amateur Dirt Track Horizon winner, Jared Mees, won a pair of hard-fought, side-byside battles with Don Mullen and Raun Wood to take the 600cc A and Sportsman finals. Dallas Baer celebrated his birthday a day early by winning the Over 30 and 500cc TwoValve finals. Wood knew he had to get a good start in the 250cc A final, but he earned a trip to the penalty line for his "slight" three-length holeshot. Mellinger and Klinefelter quickly pulled a few lengths in front of Bob Sweeten, Brian Phillips Jr. and Ray Lied. Mellinger went to the higher line, with Klinefelter staying lower. Throughout the race, they were virtually side by side, with Klinefelter slightly better off two and Mellinger better off four. Wood worked his way up to pressure Sweeten for third. As they crossed the line, Mellinger held a bike-length margin. The 600cc A final had more than its share of fireworks, pitting the top National Amateur against the newly crowned 600cc Pro Sport champion and also a National number holder and one of the fastest riders present. The National number holder, Don Mullen, led the Pro Sport champ, Raun Wood, with the Amateur champ, Jared Mees, right behind. In their drive for the lead, they left John Winsett Jr. a lonely fourth. They each went to a separate line, Mullen down low, Mees in the middle and Wood up high. Depending upon your angle, each rider led at various parts of the track, with Mees usually in front at the line, with Mullen inches behind. Coming off the final turn, Mullen bobbled slightly, letting Wood take second. The later Sportsman final looked like part two, except Winsett made an effort to get into the mix off the line. However, this time, Mees was in control by the end of the fourth lap, while Winsett's challenge lasted until the sixth lap, when Wood pulled out a few lengths.
