was second. Behind them were Medrano, Mann, Satchwell, Cycle Gear/Suzuki's Sheena Patterson, Hudson and Thor/Scott/Kawasaki jockey Kristy Myers. Bau started in about 10th, but soon her moto got worse when she tipped over and was slow to get back under way. Laier was all over Whitmore and soon got around. Laier soon had a cushion of several seconds on Whitmore, while Satchwell was moving through the pack. Mann held off the charging Satchwell for a few laps, and their battle brought them up on to Whitmore's rear fender. Once they caught up to Whitmore, Satchwell made her play and got around them both. Whitmore knew Mann was there, too, and she picked up the pace, getting back a few bike lengths on Mann. Satchwell was now in the position to ride her own pace, and she started to eat into Laier's lead. The German was too far ahead and too fast, so Steel City Raceway: Germany's Steffi Laier topped the podium at the sixth and final round of the WML Bel-Ray MX Championship Series in Delmont, Pennsylvania. Laier's On Top of It DELMONT, PA, SEPT. 1-2 t was the season finale, and the points leaders were ready to go. Tania Satchwell had a six-point lead on Stefy Bau. Not only was this event the last round of the series, it was also one of two unique events of the series, in which the second moto was to be run on Sunday, during the AMA Pro National Series. This offered the Pro women to showcase their talents in front of thousands of spectators. The WML took advantage of this and held an autograph session at 11:30 Sunday morning. The fan turnout was so large that the 30 minutes that had been allowed for the session was not nearly enough. Though they had to leave to get on the line for their moto, the girls did not disappoint their fans; they came back later to sign more autographs. In fact, the Pro women were seen signing autographs for excited fans throughout the entire afternoon. In the first Pro moto, the riders were close together out of the gate, but it was Germany's Steffi Laier who was out front early. Behind her were DKNY/Troy Lee Designs/Husqvarnabacked Elin Mann, AGP/FMF/ Answer's Satchwell, No Fear/FMF/ Yamaha's Sarah Whitmore, RRP/ UFO/Honda-backed Bau, and 48 OCTOBER 17, 2001 • c u e • _ I Steel City Raceway Delmont, Pennsylvenle September 1-2, 2001 Results: (Round & of &J PRO: ]. AHRMA National Motocross Championship Series Round 14: Portland Trail Riders Clark Clocks Three WML Bel·Ray MX Championship Series Round &: Steel City Raceway By STEVEN BONNAU Satchwell rode smart and stayed in second, which would give her the championship. Whitmore rode well and finished in third, with Mann fourth. Bau had a good ride even after all her bad luck and moved all the way up to seventh by moto's end, which was good enough to maintain second in the series. Whitmore went 4-3 on the weekend and came up two points behind Patterson in the battle for third in the series chase. MSR/Pro Circuit/Plano Honda's Jacki Hudson. Laier moved out early and started to leave the field behind on her KTM. Satchwell made short work of Mann, moving into second. As Satchwell started to pull away and make up the gap on Laier, Mann was under pressure from Bau. Behind Bau, the everfast Whitmore was making her way toward the front. Bau soon got around Mann, and then Whitmore was all over Mann. Behind Whitmore, another battle was brewing, between Hudson and Fox/Husqvarna-sponsored Vania Medrano, who came up from Guatemala to test her skills against the best riders in the world. Out front, Laier continued to maintain about the same distance ahead of Satchwell. Mann held off the challenges of Whitmore for another lap, but Whitmore was too fast and took fourth away from her. Mann continued to have a tough moto, as Hudson soon found her way around and dropped her another position. Laier held on for an easy win, with Satchwell not making up a whole lot of time on her. Bau held on for third but lost two more points in the championship chase. In moto two, the USA girls made America proud, which was apparent by the roar of the crowd when Whitmore grabbed the holeshot and Laier n __ s By TERRY GATES PORTLAND, lI\l, AUG. 25 he day of the first-ever AHRMA National at the Portland Trail Riders track dawned with threats of Michigan thunderstorms. Several times it rained lightly, yet the storms stayed away. The only effect the rain had was to let the water truck rest, as the sandy track stayed perfectly tacky, with no dust at all. The sand-loam track and almost 200 AHRMA motocross racers made for a great day of National racing. Several AHRMA National titles are close in points, and as the season winds down, the racing was hard in most motos. The track layout was excellent, and many riders commented favorably on the mile-plus layout. The track skirted the modern track and had some good, rolling elevation changes, sandy berms and Vintagefriendly jumps, resulting in a challenging but safe course. The proof was that the ambulance stayed parked all day. In the fast Over 40 Expert contest, 250cc Honda-mounted Mark Mackay and 250cc Penton pilot Kevin Brown battled hard, as usual. Brown proved best with a 1-1 tally to Mackay's 2-2 score. The Penton squad has been very fast this year. In the Over 40 Intermediate class, 250cc Honda jockey Jeffrey Clark continued his season-long winning ways with 1-1 finishes. Maico 400cc T man Jim McCulloch followed with a 2-2 tally, and Joe Hart from Las Vegas was third with a 3-3 tally. The Sportsman 125cc Experts put on a great show, with Suzuki TM rider Mark Weaver from Ohio winning the second moto among the Honda Elsinore pack and James Smith's lone Can-Am. Eric Muffley from Indiana won the National with a 1-2 tally, and last year's champion and. the current points leader, Bill Nazelrod, finished second with 3-3 finishes. The Over 50 Intermediates had some good racing, with positions changing constantly. Honda rider Nick Boring from Troy, Michigan, posted a 2-1 for the overall, with Maico man Ron Winget running close for second overall with a 1-3 score. The Sportsman 250cc classes were fast and furious, as usual. The Experts battled hard, making for a near-repeat of the Over 40 class. Again, it was Penton pilot Brown with a perfect 1-1 score and the overall, and a close-charging Mackay was second again, with a 2-2. In the Intermediate class, Clark again dominated with 1-1 score, with second place going to William Alexander from Georgia (2-2). In Sportsman 250cc Novice action, a large field chased Honda 250cc rider James Radcliff from Missouri, who went 3-1 for the win. Dave Kutskel ran consistently, getting second place with a 22 tally. The 1-3 score of very fast Novice rider Michael Nichols from Kentucky earned him third; he also won the
