I;j z Beginner, Vet Pro and Old-Timer Novice classes, making for a very strange motocross race. Menad Medhy came all the way up from Beverly Hills with a sharp-looking CR125. In addition to his regular work in the 125cc class, Medhy signed up to contest the Vet Beginner division as well. Much to the surprise of most in attendance, he got the holeshot in the fifth event. It was short-lived, however, as 250cc Novice riders Aaron Arnbrister and Morgan Crawford came roaring by on the second lap. Arnbrister took control early, but Crawford took advantage of a mistake, stuffing by when Ambrister went a little too wide in one of the turns. Crawford was setting the fastest times on the track until he came upon a fallen lapper late in the race. He didn't see the yellow flag in time, and as he was coming around a corner, he had to lay the bike down in order to avoid injuring himself or his fallen comrade. Arnbrister took over from there and cruised to victory in the first moto. When the gate dropped on the second race, Crawford made his way to the front quickly and immediately started opening up a gap. His 2-1 scores equaled Arnbrister's in points, but the second-moto victory was the tie breaker. Hey, it's not a local race report without some coverage of the 50cc class. On this particular night, Landon Sullivan and Zach Summers were the guys to watch. Sullivan swept both motos in the 50cc (7-8) division, while Summers took the Open class by storm. Summers was the big dog on the track, leading all racers aboard his powerful Cobra. All in all, it was another great night of racing in Madera. The hardest of the hard-core Cen-Cal riders were out in force again. After all, no matter how hot it is, riding beats doing anything else. eN gj w a: 0. Manchester and Dukie Ermolenko both recovered after poor opening rides and joined Eric Carrillo to take round-two wins. Bast continued his perfect score in the middle round, dodging a possible missile when Hedden lifted at the start, fell behind and couldn't get around the wily veteran. Faria kept pace with a win, Manchester got his second victory in a row, and Chad Felicio continued his impressive run with a win over Tommy Hedden and Carrillo. In round four, Tommy got his only win of the meeting, after which Bast had the battle of his night with the pesky Felicio, who eventually slid back to finish second. "Man, Chad had me worried in that fourth:round heat," said a grinning Bast later. "Somebody told me it was an easy round, but Felicio showed you can't take anything for granted he almost kicked my butt." Faria and Manchester finished out the round with wins over Ermolenko and Bobby Hedden. After four of five rounds, Bast led the way with 12 points, Faria was close at 11 points, and Manchester was still in the hunt with 10. In the opening heat of the final round, Felicio got his second win of the night, beating Rick Shafer and Billy Hiles. In the second heat, Ermolenko also notched his second three-point victory, leaving second and third to Rich Marcucci and Chris "Krash" Kerr. In the penultimate heat, Manchester put the first dent in Bast's armor when he got a stellar gate from lane four and went on to win. With Bast finally dropping a point, the door opened for Faria to tie up the score. In the final race of the night, all Faria had to do was score the win, which would force a run-off with Bast for the Auburn track championship. The only problem was that Bobby Hedden had plans of his own, and they included a perfect gate from lane four, a win and a 12-point fourth-place finish. Which, of course, is exactly what he did to spoil Faria's championship aspirations. Faria's second-place finish dropped him into a tie with Manchester for second place. In the runoff, Manchester once again got away fast from starting grid four and put Faria behind him to finish second overall. In the DiviSion Two Championship, Ron Woodsford led most of the way, and once Tom Adams fell hard in the final turn, he had the track title all to himself. In the Division Three finale, Auburn's Mike Achilles made a finalturn pass of Bruce Baker to take over second place. Bruce's brother David already had the victory in hand and rolled across the finish line with the Auburn Division Three championship. eN Fast Fridays Speedwsy Aubum. califomia Results: August 31, 2001 C'SHIP: 1.
