WERA Vintage Road Racing Round 17: Talladega Grand Prix Raceway Page Masters Talladega Bv STEVE STASER TALLADEGA, AL, AUG. 25 L Scott County Fairgrounds: Jake "Fogy" Fogelberg rides his "big wheel" in the 125cc B SX class at round 12 of the Minnesota State Supercross series in Jordan. bucked him. He proved, in convincing fashion, that he is still a winner. Wodtke decimated the competition in the 80cc (7-11) heat race from holeshot to checkered flag, leaving Allen Quandrud of Hastings in second. Austin Vig from Prior Lake ended up third, Aoh's Eric Espe landed the fourth spot, and Robbie Sands, also from Jordan, was fifth. Wodtke got right back on the track for the 80cc (12-15) class and won that heat race, also. A bad start in the main forced him to fight his way through the pack to catch the red rocket of his friend and riding buddy Trevor Tuma from Lonsdale. Tuma must have wanted that kiss from the trophy girls more, as he barely edged out Wodtke by half a bike length at the checkered flag. Scott Doerfher, who recently moved to Oakdale from Ar\zor:!a, is showing he is a force to be reckoned with, and he took the hist spot on the podium. Andrew Jeurissen got fourth, and Ricky Vig of Shakopee rounded out the top five. With 31 125cc C riders, their class was split into two heats and a lastchance qualifier to narrow the field down to 20 riders for the main. In the main, both heat winners - Trent Sims of Tonka Bay, and Eddie Gregory of Savage - battled it out for the lead. Sims got the holeshot and won, as Gregory was unable to catch him. Gregory was just barely ahead of Carver's Adam Jeurissen, in third. Adam Turner from Minnetonka held off the late-race charge of Prior Lake's Brandon Wangerin, and the two placed fourth and fifth, respectively. "I got the holeshot," Sims recounted. "Then one of my buddies, Dylan Turner, pulled up next to me and actually passed me on the start. Then me and 124 [Gregory] battled the whole race. I pulled a little lead on him over the triples and went on to win - 124 was riding good." In the Pro class, James Povolny of Mendota Heights and Mike Kann of Oronoco took time off from the national circuit to come out and show the boys how the big dogs run. Povolny took his Dr. Medzger/TMR/ Moose/Bridgestone/M2R Helmets Honda CR250 to an uncontested victory. Kann, on his Platinum Motorsports/ScottfTwin Air Yamaha YZ250 held off the hard-charging 16-yearold Brett Ohland of Prior Lake. Ohland, on his South Metro Motorsports/Factory Connection/Images In Motion/Trackside Performance YZ125, couldn't get Kann for second and settled for third. Promoter Lee Theis of Belle Plaine was fourth, and Brandon Backes from Hastings rounded out the top five. "The track gets better and better every year I come out," Povolny said. "I'm going along-·and enjoying my days off right now. It's a fun race." eN Scott county Fairgrounds Jordan, Minneso1a Results: July 25, 2001 (Round 121 50 CHAIN SX: I. Dan Greig (KTM): 2. Don Oreskovich (Su,). ouisville, Kentucky's Harold Page - the 1997 Vintage One and Vintage Two champion - took another victory in the Vintage One class, giving him three wins in a row. This one came at the expense of his Team Steve-O's Racing teammate Eric Cook, who has been the bridesmaid of late, finishing second in Vintage One in four out of his last five outings. Page is trying to recapture the championship, as he's closing in on points leader Buff Harsh. This was WERA Vintage's second stop at this northeastern Alabama track and also the second round of the Southeast Regional Championship. The Heavyweight Classic race started off the day's close racing, as the Ted Hubbard BSA singles of David Rutherford, David Matthews and David Cornelison battled for the top three spots all race long. Rutherford snagged the holeshot and led the first lap, with Matthews in close pursuit, in front of Cornelison. Rutherford stayed in front - though not by much - for the first half of the race. Cornelison started to fade in third as Matthews made his move on the eighth lap of the 10-lapper. He pulled even with his teammate on the front straight and dived under Rutherford to take the lead in turn one. However, in turn four at the end of the hack' •chute, Rutherford returned the favo'r and drove under his fellow thumper ·rider. Rutherford held the. lead after that and took the win. As the Honda 350s lined up for the Vintage One clash, Page, on the Barnacle Bill's Leathers-sponsored Honda, faced off against Royal Racing's Rixon Breckon and Cook, who is currently second in points with his winless but consistent runs. Page shot into the lead as Cook tucked in behind. Breckon led the rest of the pack in third. Page and Cook pulled away after one lap. Page tried desperately -to keep his younger teammate behind him, but it was plain to see Cook had a little more motor. On lap two, Cook powered past Page on the back straight. The former champ knew his only chance was to gain all the ground he could by outbraking and outcornering the determined Cook. His patience and experience paid off as he drew in Cook. Page waited until the last lap, and in the first of the two bowls he drove past on the outside and regained the lead. Cook then tried the same move by pulling even in the last bowl on the outside. Page outfoxed him by taking his line away and keeping him outside. Then Cook got a great drive out of the last turn and tried to slingshot past, but Page won the drag race to the flag by about half a bike length. Breckon held on for third after shaking off challenges from Eric Smith and Kenneth Debelak. In the adjoined Formula 500 race, Quick Bike boss Dick Gruhn ,took the f1ag-to-f1'ag win ove'r" Lynford Garland and Scott McCain. Richard Merhar brought something different to Vintage Two as he lined Talladega Grand Prix Raceway: Harold Page Jr. (44) rode his Honda to the Vintage One win over teammate Eric Cook (777) at WERA Vintage's second stop In Talladega, Alabama. eye I • n .., _ S • OCTOBER 10. 2001 69
