Henry County Fairgrounds: Jordan Moneymaker (814) and Jamaal Bond (547) dueled in the 25OcclOpen A and 16-24 classes at the opening round of the Midwest Challenge series in Paris, Tennessee. Midwest Challenge Round 1: Henry County Fairgrounds Moneymaker CashesIn to good use and maintaining a solid advantage over Bond, who was having problems hooking up on the hard· packed surface. By halfway, Moneymaker was alone in first, and Smith was mounting a charge on Bond, who in turn pulled a few seconds clear from Smith to maintain second. At the checkers, Moneymaker took the win over Bond, Smith and Akins. In the 16-24 class, the crowd was treated to another battle between Moneymaker and Bond. Moneymaker had the quickest reflexes off the gate and powered into the lead; he held the tight inside line through the first turn while Bond attempted to rail around Moneymaker on the outside, but the attempt was futile. Moneymaker continued his dominance through the stadium whoops, but Bond made his move in the corner preceding the rhythm section to grab the lead. A few turns later, Moneymaker tried the inside line on the offcamber turn by the scoring tower, but it was not enough to retake the lead. At the beginning of lap two, the order was Bond, Moneymaker, Shane Kissiar and Suzuki rider Jared Arnold. By halfway, Bond and Moneymaker had checked out, and Smith was alone in third. Meanwhile, Kissiar was feeling intense pressure from John Hutchason, who was charging hard and looking to take fourth. At the checkers, By RANDY SANSOM PARIS, TN, AUG. 25 he first round of the 11th annual Midwest Challenge series lived up to its pre-event billing as the best Stadia-cross event yet. The track design was all new this year and offered multiple lines for passing opportunities. More than 175 riders from six states turned out for the event, and the racing was fast and furious in many classes. Riders ran four-lap qualifiers in all classes to determine starting position for the eight-lap main events. The larger classes also ran consolation motos to allow everyone a shot at the big time. In the 250cc/Open A qualifier, Honda speedster Jamaal Bond snagged the holeshot and then proceeded to methodically motor away from Kawasaki rider Jordan Moneymaker and Husqvarna-mounted Derek Smith. This heat was combined with the Over 30 A class, in which Danny Akins gave Smith a run for his money, just to let him know that sometimes youth is no match for experience. In the combined 250cc/Open A and Over 30 A final, Moneymaker jammed into the lead and immediate· ly began to distance himself from Bond. Moneymaker appeared to be in the zone, putting his fluid riding style T 68 OCTOBER 10.2001 • cue I I1JI n 11JI .. S Bond took a three-second win over Moneymaker, who was followed by Smith, Kissiar and Hutchason. As the 16-24 class blasted out of the gate again, it was again Moneymaker with the holeshot, followed closely by Bond, who was ahead of Kawie pilot Hutchason. Meanwhile, Smith was slashing through the field after a midpack start and was in third by lap three. Bond was chasing Moneymaker but, just as in their previous meeting in the 250cc/Open A final, Moneymaker was not about to surrender the lead. Meanwhile, Hutchason dropped back to ninth and was soon lapped by the leaders. Suzie pilot Arnold moved into fourth. Seconds later, Smith dropped his Husky in a turn and, to everyone's surprise, the stadium's track lights blacked out! The grandstands still had just enough light to allow the race to continue. The win went to Moneymaker, followed by Bond, Smith, Arnold and Russell Hall. In Over 30 BIC qualifying action, Paul Puckett grabbed the holeshot but went down. Brandon Langhans inherited the lead and led for nearly two laps before allowing Honda-mounted Kenneth White to move past for the heat win. In the Over 30 BIC final, Langhans and Puckett fought for the holeshot, with Langhans assuming the point position exiting turn one. Puckett followed in second entering the stadium whoops and was being pressured by heat-winner White, who was being chased by Missouri's Terry Toombs. A battle for second began when Yamaha charger Paul Koerner entered the fray. By midmoto, White was out front, Koerner had muscled his way into second, and Puckett had slipped past Langhans into third. On lap six, Koerner moved up on White and attempted a block-pass. A little bumping and grinding ensued, but White maintained his composure as well as the lead. At the checkers, the order was White, Koerner, Puckett, Chris Rowlette and Toombs. The 65cc (7-11) qualifier proved to be a Cody Miller showcase. as he snagged the holeshot on his KTM. Lap by lap, Miller methodically pulled away from the rest of the pack with authority, encountering lappers within three laps. At the checkers, it was Miller, followed by Kawasaki rider Tony Thomas. In the 65cc (7-11) finale, Miller was in a league of his own, lapping the entire field once and some of the riders twice. Needless to say, Miller took the win over Cobra rider Zachary Thompson. _ Hlllry County fail'Jll'Ouads Pari., Tenna.... Rasults: August 25, 2881 lRoIlllll 11 50 SHAFT: 1. JOShU8 Cartwright (Yam); 2. Minnesota State SUpercross Series Round 12: Scott CoIIIty FlirgroURds Wodtke Returns BY GUY OHLAND JORDAN, MN, JULY-25 record number of racers showed up Wednesday night at the Scott County Fairgrounds to compete in round 12 of the 14-round Minnesota State Supercross Series. With the county fair going on, it was definitely a festive atmosphere. The boys at Motokazie had the track prepped to their usual top-quality standards. The county had even completed paving the road coming into the pits, turning the Jordan event into one of the best A amateur supercross venues in the state. "Warm weather welcomed the spectators who filled the stands to near capacity, ready to watch the hottest action around at the final round to be held this year at the fairgrounds. The last two rounds are in Austin and Owatonna, Minnesota. Local fast boy Matt Wodtke of Jordan made his return to the supercross track after missing the first 11 rounds due to a broken leg suffered while practicing at the beginning of the season at the Jordan track. He wanted to get back on the horse that
