Don't let their age fool youl These guys went at it. Honda rider Frank Helms from Alto, Michigan, had to reel in firs -moto holeshot artist Larry Stewart and battle past John Korte, who led most of the first moto until Helms got past on the final circuit. Larry Brock put on a charge to the front in the opening moto, doing the Valley Doubles and closing in on the front-running duo of Korte and Helms. The second moto was all Helms'; he left the second spot to Korte, with Stewart getting the big 500cc Honda running better in the second moto for third. Brock brought his Honda in for fourth. MXWest Nevada State Championship Series Round 3: Fernley International Raceway Baugh Breaks 'em at Fernley By ROBERT BEAUPRE FERNLEY,NV,AQG.19 ith high temperatures and the demanding Fernley sand circuit as the backdrop, Minden's Nick Baugh posted a double-moto sweep of the 125cc Intermediate division at the third round of the MXWest Nevada State Championship Series. Baugh was able to post two ciean victories, despite a considerable pack of talented racers not too far off his rear wheel. Baugh rocketed his Works Racing and Development-backed Yamaha to the front of the pack in the first moto for the holeshot, followed closely by Honda rider Josh Peterson, KTMmounted Michael White, and another CR rider, Stephen Payne. White was quick to move into second before the completion of the first lap and seemed intent on reeling in Baugh, who gained a couple of seconds on the field on the first lap. The top four were establishing themselves as a freight train at the front, with Payne now pushing Peterson for the third spot, which he would claim before the third lap. White's eagerness to move to the front had began to work against him by the fourth lap, however, as mistakes began letting Baugh stretch his lead. The running order of Baugh, White, Payne and Peterson seemed to be well-established on the final lap - until an off-track excursion by White allowed Payne to secure the second spot at the finish. In the second moto, Baugh and Peterson once again placed their machines at the front, with Payne trailing in third. The running order W remained unchanged until the fourth lap, on which Yamaha-mounted Jeff Klino began to make his presence felt in the top three after a mediocre start. He displaced both Payne and Peterson before the final lap, on which he chased Baugh to the finish for second in the moto, followed by Peterson and Payne. The overall results had Baugh on top with a perfect 1-1 score, followed by Payne in second, with Klino rounding out the top three. The win stretched Baugh's lead in the Nevada State Championship Series. The battles on the track were not limited to the big bikes, though, as the Pee Wee (0-7) class featured upand-comers of the smallest variety. The first moto saw a commanding victory by Polini-mounted Lucas Jones, but it was the second moto that tested his resolve the most. The holeshot was snagged by KTM pilot Cory Colombini, followed closely by Polini pilot Wesley Valerio. First-moto winner Jones was mired midpack, but not for long. On the second lap, Jones was out front and riding hard, but within a quarter of a lap Jones was on the ground on the face of a large tabletop, scrambling to restart his machine. That miscue gave the lead back to Colombini, who was now being pushed by Valerio. Jones' speedy recovery had left some hope of his once again catching the leaders, and he seemed determined to capitalize on the opportunity, but on the very next lap, Jones was down again, this time harder. Momentarily motionless, Jones once again quickly remounted as if nothing had hap- pened, much to the relief of onlookers. However, the battle was now between Colombini and Valerio, with Colombini still at the point. Then a miscue early on the fourth lap by Colombini handed a comfortable lead, and the eventual win, to Valerio. It was Valerio's patience and persistence that paid the biggest dividend in the postings, as he claimed the overall victory. Colombini followed in second, with Jones - who held on to finish the second moto, despite his two rather hard falls - taking third. A large 125cc Junior tumout made it necessary to divide the group into two divisions. The first was claimed by Suzuki-mounted Tyson Waldron and the second by Rory Krein, on his KTM. A light Pro class turnout did little to dampen the eff,?rts of Fernley regulars Butch and Scott Stillmock, who posted victories in the Over 30 and 250cc Pro classes, respectively. Proclass newcomer Paul Mudd placed second behind Stillmock in the 250cc Pro division after receiving his bump from the Intermediate class just last week.
