Bast had to eam his win after a single-file restart in the Handicap main. As early race leader Ian Essary passed the start/fmish line to clock in two completed laps, 20-yard starter Chris Kerr got into Bryan Yarrow and the two ended up in the turn-four dirt. After Yarrow, who got the worst of the scuffle, rose to his feet, the race was resumed, with Kerr at the back of the line. Although Essary was stationed at the front of the line, his comfortable early-race lead was all but chewed up, as Yarrow and then Bast, Bobby Hedden and Chris Manchester were all staggered at fiveyard intervals directly off his rear tire. At the outset of the restart, Bast was on the move. After quickly dispensing with Yarrow. he took over the lead when Essary went wide and eventually fell one tum shy of the white last-lap flag. Once Bast had the lead, it was all but over; Hedden followed him around for second, Yarrow held on to third, and Kerr kept the rubber side down for fourth. In the Scratch main, Bast quickly went to work gardening the number-two starting box to uncover any leftover traction he could find. Visiting Polish speedway star Bartek Bardecki drew the pole and joined Bast in some animat- ed boot-heel farming. Manchester selected lane three, which left the outside box to Mike Faria, who earlier in the night had won the Arrowhead Speedway: Bartek Bardecki enjoyed his last night of racing in San Bernardino, California, before going home to Poland, placing runner-up In the Handicap main event. final round of the Championship Challenge. After starter Mark Joiner clicked the starting' gate button, Bast and Faria moved off the line simultaneously and, after jostling through the first turn, they came together in the apex between the two opening bends. The fun part of the night was the match rZlce between Hamill and Junior rider Justin Boyle. Hamill had to borrow a bike from Justin's dad, Mike Boyle, to make the race happen, With a substantial handicap to over· come, Hamill almost caught the youngster at the checkers. In the first semi, the pole went to Dukie Ermolenko, with Poland's Bartek Bardecki in Fast Fridays Speedway two, Fisher in three and "Fast" Ed Castro in Bast Dominates Fast Fridays four. The gate went to Ermolenko, but Fisher was leading as they came out of two. It was pretty much over before it started. Ermolenko was second, and both were headed to the Scratch main. The Scratch Consi had Bardecki on the pole, with Brant in two, and Estes and Castro in three and four. Bardecki went out hard, but Castro went out a little harder and ran him down before one lap was in the books. Brant took over second as they came around on two and kept it. Bardecki and Estes finished out the field. The pole went to Ermolenko for the Scratch main. Hamill drew two, with Fisher and Schwartz in three and four. Hamill got the best gate, but Fisher had the most ponies and he took the lead and started putting daylight between himself and the rest of the field. HamiU gave chase but was hampered by unfamiliar equipment and settled for second. Ermolenko and Schwartz rounded out the field. The Handicap main had Harmatiuk on the lO-yard line, Cooley on the 20, Bardecki on the 30, Schwartz on the 40, and Ennolenko and Fisher on the 50. Harmatiuk held on for three laps before Fisher ran him down, and one lap later Bardecki got through. Harmatiuk held off Ermolenko for third. Schwartz and Cooley were fifth and sixth. Kim Stevens went over the moon again as she won the Division Two B main. This is the sec· ond win for the young lady from New Zealand, and she did it coming from behind.
