Hayden Willow Springs International Raceway Graves Does "em In By ERIc VINCENT ROSAMOND, CA, AUG. 18-19 Chuck Graves returned to the top of the victory podium after capturing the win in the Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula One Grand Prix event during the eighth round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club action at Willow Springs International Raceway. Graves cruised to victory, beating out runner-up Jeremy Toye, who had won the FI event the past three months straight. Toye was the fastest racer off the line, grabbing the holeshot, but he was passed by Graves halfway to turn two on his Dunlopshod Yamaha YZF-R I. Bryan Kovarick managed to emerge in third after separating himself from a swarm of riders exiting tum two. Midway through lap nine of the 12-lap race. Ken Chase powered past Vincent Haskovec to position himself in fourth. Chase had closed the gap considerably on Kovarick in third; he remained in Kovarick's draft: for a few laps until he moved around Kovarick on the outside of turn three. Kovarick spent the final two laps trying to get past Chase. Rounding tum nine for the final time, Kovarick was in Chase's draft, but Chase twisted the throttle and crossed the line in third, behind Graves and Toye. "We got out there and had some fun," said Toye afterward. "I didn't have my head in it for the first four laps and Chuck got out in front of me." "I really wanted to make a race out of it." Grave said. "Jeremy and Ken are really running well and making me earn Ihese wins." In the Hyperc!ub/WSMC Formula Two Grand Prix. Graves captured the win again, but it wasn't quite as easy as in Formula One. Kovarick was first off the line, with Kenny Kopecky second and Graves third. Graves passed Kopecky out of turn two on the first lap, and soon after, Haskovec powered his way into third. Graves shadowed Kovarick throughout the first of 10 laps and then used the short section between turns two and three to pass Kovarick and take the lead on lap two. 'MCA Kovarick tried twice to retake the lead in the long tum-eight sweeper on lap three, but it wasn't until turn one on the next lap that Kovarick was able to power back into the lead. At this point, Kovarick, Graves and Haskovec were tightly packed. Graves shot back into the lead on the front straight on lap six. On the tum-eight sweeper on lap seven, Kovarick attempted to pass Graves on the outside. Meanwhile, Haskovec powered past Graves on the inside to move into the lead. On the next lap, Graves passed Kovarick to retake the lead in turn one. Then, going through tum six, Haskovec crashed and forced Kovarick off the track. He re-entered the race In third, behind Jacob West. With only a lap and a half left, Kovarick couldn't make up the distance to West, leaving Graves with the win, West second and Kovarick third.
