t seemed impressive enough, initialIy. In the early laps of the event,
some of the teams were riding so
hard that it appeared they were not in
an all-day endurance race, but a
National Motocross. Defending
champ Ty Davis' 426cc Yamaha was
bouncing off the rev limiter as he built
up a large advantage through the first
few circuits, and the number-two
Kawasaki 10<250 squad was going so
hard that Shane Esposito crashed
hard right off the 10 a.m. start, but
soon enough, it became apparent
that ·steady and easy· was the preferred approach, as the fast-starting
bikes began pitting with major engine
problems. And that's when the
patience of the Honda XR650Rmounted quartet of brothers Steve
and Joe Hengeveld, Tim Staab and
former GP MXer Mike Healey paid off.
"Everyone rode really good and
kept a good pace going to where we
weren't killing the bike,· Steve
Hengeveld said. ·We knew we weren't
winning [early], but we saw how hard
the other guys were riding, and we
