WEIA Vintage Road Racing Round 15: Putnam Park Raceway Lipert at Home in Indiana By STEVE STASER MOGNT MERIDIAN, IN, AGG. 11 S tanley Upert, from nearby Elyria, Ohio, took wins in the Formula RD and Formula 500 classes. Upert has five straight doubles at this central 'Indiana track, dating back to May of 2000. The soon-to-be first-time father also leads in points in both classes. WERA Vintage racers were treated to a beautiful day, with temperatures in the low 80s and a slight breeze quite unlike the blistering heat the Midwest has been suffering of late. In the first race of the day, Formula RD, Upert had a tough time of it as he chased a determined Wes Orloff on his Ronald & Brian's Suzuki-sponsored RD. Orloff stayed in front of Upert for the first five of the race's eight laps. On lap six, Upert drafted past Orloff on the long front straightaway and never looked back. Josh Smith-Moore took a distant third. Two Ted Hubbard-prepared BSA singles took the first two spots in the Heavyweight Classic division, as David Matthews took the win over his teammate Mick McDaniels, with Thomas Bentley handling third. Doug Bowie ran away with the Ughtweight Classic win on his BCM Cycles 250cc Ducati. Bultaco jockey Mike Mefford took second and Team Giannini's Buck Sexton grabbed third. Race two featured Formula 500, Vintage One and Mediumweight Classic. Upert grabbed his second win of the day by leading from flag to flag in Formula 500, with Robert Newby taking his Wohlfield's Yamaha TZ to a solid second and Orloff settling for third. Team Steve-O enjoyed a one/two finish in Vintage One, as Harold Page Jr. took the win after a battle with Steve Pennington. Page pulled away by lap six, and his teammate Mike Schulte reeled in Pennington and took the second spot away. Bowie took his second win of the day in Mediumweight Classic, over Bentley and Mefford.
