The always-competitive 125cc Beginner class was swept by David Schueller, aboard the Bert's Mega Mall Yamaha, over Yamaha riders Dale Shelton (3-4-2) and Brandon Strausbaugh (2-2-5) and the rest of the 12rider field. Abie Lara Jr. collected an easy win in the 250cc Beginner class. Starwest Motocross Park Hall Leads the Way MORENO VALLEY, CA, AUG. 18 Montclair Yamaha-backed Cooper Hall put in two perfect motos Saturday night at Starwest in the 85cc Beginner (0-11) class. In the first moto, Hall took the holeshot, followed by Noe Lopez and Joshua Bloodworth. Hall started to pull away with the lead, while Lopez was a strong second and Bloodworth settled into third. Hall easily took the win, followed by Lopez and Bloodworth. In the second mota, Hall repeated his holeshot, but this time Bloodworth was close behind. Hall responded by stepping up the pace, pulling away and putting his Yamaha on cruise control. Bloodworth, however, was hanging tough in second, with Lopez third. Lopez experienced a bad start this mota and was having a tough time playing catch-up, trying to close the gap between himself and Bloodworth. Hall took the win, with Bloodworth second and Lopez third. Donnie Kearney was the king of the Mini divisions, taking a four-moto sweep in the 85cc (0-11) and Supermini classes. Michael Raines, who seems to be getting faster each week, was able to keep Keamey in sight in the Supermini class, but he was unable to stop the king. Another fast rider, little Daniel "Boone" Paluzzi, made his debut aboard his John Burrbacked Kawasaki in the 65cc (6-8) division a race to remember. Getting some riding tips from trainer Kirk Henricksen, Paluui was lIble to take second overall in the class (which ran combined with the 9- to II-year-old diVision), just behind big brother Nick. In big-bike action, Shaun Higham was in total control of his Kawasaki as ile swept both motos in the 125cc Beginner class. Higham got the holeshot in both motos and never looked backed. John Foster was able to finish second in the first moto and Curtis Lacey WllS third. In the second mota, Higham took the early lead, and the battle was on between Brian DlIvis and Foster for second. Davis rode smoothly and was not making any mistakes to hold on to his second-place position. Foster tried continuously to close the gap, but Davis did not back down and almost seemed to go faster to ease the pressure. Higham took the win, followed by Davis and Foster. R••ults 50 (4·6): I. Orr Long Island Cycle Park Berry Picks Up Island MX Wins By TAMMY MERRILL YAPHANK, NY, AUG. 12 Brian Berry made the crowd roar at another exciting race at Long Island's new home track. Island Motocross opened its gates just a few months ago after a long process of obtaining permits. It was just the second race at Long Island Cycle Park, and local rider Berry rode the track like he had been riding there all his life. Berry rides both a Honda and a Yamaha, proving that it is the rider who wins the race. Berry swept through his 250cc Expert and Over 25 Expert motos on his 250cc Honda. In the first moto of the 250cc Expert class, Berry barely got the holeshot, with Ron Tallon and Carlo Gagliardo side by side. Berry pulled ahead with his smooth riding style and kept the lead throughout the entire mota. The second moto was like an instant replay. Berry took first, Tallon took second, and Gagliardo took third overall. Berry came off the track on a Honda and immediately jumped aboard a Yamaha 250cc four-stroke, ready to race his 125cc Expert mota. Berry placed first in all six motos he raced, giving him the overllil finishes in three classes. R•• ults Pee. Wee Track 50 (4-6) SHAFT: I. Jacob Highland (Yam): 2. JUltln Haywood (Yam): 3. Sponsored by the California Valley Stockton chapter of the Harley Owner's Group, which was chartered in 1988 and now has an average membership of 190, the event was very well planned. The California Valley Stockton chapter also sponsors other charity events, including an Easter run for the kids, a "Fun Run" to Murphy's, the Stockton Police Department Holiday Toy Project, and many others. The Hot Harley Nights event was the brainchild of Walt Givens of Stockton, California, four years ago, and it is made possible by the generosity of mllny families and businesses that were approached for donations. This year's event paid over $8000 in prize money, spread among the top 12 riders in both mains. The track was well-groomed, allowing for some very fast laps to be run. The B main started out with four riders on the front row (after a couple of folks jumped the line). When the green flag went down, Rick Hocking, aboard a Bultaco, pulled out and led the pack around the track until his bike stopped working well, which left Shawn Raggio out in front. Doing a great job out front, Raggio went into the tum before the jump a little too hot and found himself in the hay. Derrick Ohls - who is so new to being an A rider that his bike still sports a yellow B plate - found himself in the lead. Meanwhile, back in the pack, Trapper McDaniel, Tony Rosa and Jimmy bewis were battling for third. The race finished with Ohls in front, taking home $225, followed by Raggio, who pocketed $200, and Lewis, who earned a nice $175, and then McDaniel, who went home with $150. The last five riders of the 12 who were paid each took home $60. When it was time for the A main event, everyone was breathing a bit shallow, as the fastest guys of the night rounded the turns and went over the jump. Billy Martin, Wood Rotax rider Mark Corsetti, and Nicky Moore got the jump in front of the pack right off the line. Corsetti worked Martin hard turn after tum, waiting for a rnistake to be made. Martin proceeded throughout the 15 laps without error and held the lead from flag to flag. Behind the two front-runners, Moore, just 15 yellrs old and riding his first sellson as lin A rider aboard his Mallott's Honda/yamaha/Wiseco/Mother's Polishes/Union 76/Edge Sports Racing-sponsored Rotax, was running a strong third. The race finished with Martin winning $1275, Corsetti a neat $1025, Moore a cool $925, and Ronnie Brown pocketing $825 for fourth. The 12th-place finisher went home with $225. R•• ult. A MIN: I. The club presented a 6-mile course to test the competitors' skills. F&S/No Fear Suzuki/Smith/Lowe Racing/ Dunlop-backed Blair Bersano from Pinconning, Michigan, recorded his second victory of the year at this facility. "The course WllS laid out well lind it held up good today," Bersllno commented. "I'm racing here to get ready for the upcoming GNCCs," Prior to this race, Michigan received an abundance of rain, which, to the competitors' surprise, left the course perfect. Twelve 200cc Junior riders left from their starting positions, with KTMmounted Nathan Pietrangelo grabbing the early lead. He was followed by Thomas Emede and Jake Emede. Steven Sports Center-supported Brett Bersano was left at the line, struggling to get his RM 125 fired up. As the teenage class weaved through the woods, Thomas displaced Pietrangelo, as did the current points leader, Honda-mounted Dan Deyman. Thomas and Deyman swapped positions a number of times until Thomas overshot II benn, forfeiting his lead. Bersano was slowly worming his way through the pack, and after the fust lap he had moved up to sixth. Deyman stayed II secure distance ahead of Thomas to the finish. Bersano rode the-final lap by himself, earning a well-deserved third. Pietran9elo used his good start to finish fourth.
