RoUercoaster Racing Tour Supercms Series Round 10: Shelby Supercross A Six-Pack of Twofers held to third in the 50cc Shaft qualifier dash, coming across the finish line behind Foster and Wollenhaupt. However, Bowen was more than ready when the gate dropped for the main event, taking the early lead and pegging the Yamaha's throttle. Bowen crossed the finish line in first, with Brandon a close runner-up. Bowen owned both the qualifier and the main in the 50cc (4-6) class. Moore, AJ Powder Coating/Cafe Carolina's Jesse Helms, and Zack Brown of nearby Bel~ont kept Bowen in sight but couldn't get close enough to make good on a pass. Baker Cycle Sales/Action North Ameri ca/Sinisa 10/ Maxima -bac ked Mack Dickson of Lincolnton, North Carolina, flew his Polini to the win in the 50cc (7-8) class, getting big air over the back-stretch camelback, just ahead of Team Charlotte Motorsports KTM/Charlotte Honda/Yamahabacked KTM rider Lucas Helms. Dickson and Helms barreled into the first turn together, but Dickson made it a habit to be the one to let off the throttle last, shooting through the bowl turn to slingshot into the lead. Chelsea McSwain, Tripp Smith, Dylan Nash and Wollenhaupt did not disappoint the crowd, either, in their tussle over third, fourth and fifth. Dickson and Axo/HJC Helmets/ Bridgestone. From this, one might get the idea that the competition wasn't all that stiff but you would be wrong. Brutally hot, dry weather kept some of the regular Rollercoaster riders close to a pool or the air conditioner, but there were still more than 300 entries at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds. "We've been watering since yesterday morning, constantly," reported JMX promoter Joe Williams. "The sun and wind take the moisture right out of the ground almost as soon as we put it on.' A couple of watering breaks kept the track in good shape and most of the dust down. Adam Bowen of Shelby won the 50cc Shaft and 50cc (4-6) classes. Bowen had spirited battles in the 50cc Shaft contest with Alpha Motorsports/Net Effect Technologies/ Spy/IMS Pro/Barr's Competition's Brandon Wollenhaupt; Cody Cornwell of Belmont, North Carolina; Floor Covering by Eric/Alaskan Tree Service's Ryan Moore; and qualifier winner Treve Foster, backed by Blue Ridge Mountain Leather. Bowen was S 66 SEPTEMBER 19, 2001 • cue • e n e _ s the 65cc (7-9) class, with Double K Trailers/Neeley Racing/KawasakiSuzuki of Gastonia/Hinkles Bilifoldbacked Cody Thomas, local hero Skyler McMahan, Roebuck, South Carolina's Trevor Martin, and Shelby Outdoor Power Equipment's Austin Ropp coming along for the ride. Miss McSwain came up with the qualifier win, with Dickson, Thomas, McMahan and Martin in tow. Thomas got the main-event holeshot, but Dickson hunted him down and passed him in the early going. McSwain's start was third or fourth, depending on where you stood, and she also passed Thomas to take over second, in pursuit of Dickson. However, Mack was "on" and couldn't be caught, hopping over the finish-line tabletop with huge air for such a small bike, rivaling Michael McQuay's trajectories in 65cc (10-11) and Junior Mini competition. ICM Inc./BDR Racing's McQuay was in a different time zone for his two classes, way out front, without challenge. Brad Hinson, Justin Hopson and Justin Barringer put on a fine show of close racing in the Senior Mini qualifier, with much side-by-side action. Barringer surprised Hinson on the infield on the way to the qualifier finish, hopping over the line ahead of Hinson, Chad Vinson, "Roy Boy' Frick and Brad Rakotz. Hopson had crashed and taken himself out of contention. Hinson nailed the Senior Mini mainevent start, with Hopson, Rakotz, Barringer and Adam Bowman swarming after him. Bowman had crashed on the qualifier start but made a much better ride in the main. Hinson made no mistakes, keeping 'Hopson in second, with Rakotz, Barringer and Bowman filling out the top five. With the exception of Rakotz, the front finishers carried their competition into the Supermini clash. Although Hinson came out on top in both qualifier and main, the three remaining positions were by no means a done deal. Hopson and Barringer traded the runner-up position, while Bowman lurked nearby to see about capitalizing on a possible error if they should tangle. They didn't. eN Shelby Supen:ross Shelby, Nortll Carolina Results: August 11, 2001 [Round 10J 50 SHAFT BEG: I. Chose Vodry (Vam); 2. Brandon Holland (Yam); 3. Brandon Ropp (Yem); 4.
