"I didn't make the moves I needed to make for passes, and they got away from me," Fischer said. More critical was his incipient health crisis. "I flew in Wednesday night and I ended up in the emergency room all night, because I have to have my gall bladder out, I found out." he said. "They wanted to do it the next day [but he refused]. So I've been riding in massive pain all weekend, and I was up all night. I crashed twice Thursday because I was up all night in the emergency room. Just been a tough weekend. It's tough to get third when I knew I could have run at the front, and lose the points lead. And especially because I definitely had the bike under me to win it today, but I just kept getting stuffed and stopped by guys who ended up drifting back anyway, but early in the race they were just blocking. That was the end Formula USAIAprilia Cup Challenge Round 5: Portland International Raceway of that. It hurts a lot. I am at risk, but I'm leading the championship. What are you going to do? Not ride? I don't think so." The lead trio were well clear of the BY HENNY RAY ABRAMS PORTLAND,OR,SEPT.9 t wasn't hard to keep track of this race: There were only seven riders. And it certainly wasn't hard to keep track of the leader: There was really only one, Penguin Racing School's Jeffrey Wood, who took command of the Aprilia Cup Challenge early on and, sped to victory at Portland International Raceway; "We had good lap times all weekend so I just had to keep it on two wheels," Wood said after taking both the win and the championship points lead. There was an early challenge from Blackmans Cycle's Shannon Silva, but Wood dispatched with him posthaste. I 34 SEPTEMBER 19, 2001 • cue "Once I could lead going into [turn] one, I could stretch it through the infield till we got back to the straightaway again," Wood said. "The few times he [Silva] got by me on the straightaway, it's tough. because I spent half the track getting it back." It really wasn't until the third lap that Wood put the race away. From then on he was out front, stretching his lead bit by bit, then slowing down at the end. "Lief, my mechanic, gave me good pit signals, told me I had a spread, so I could back off a little bit and make sure I brought it home," Wood said after winning by 2.976 seconds at the end of the 12-lap, 23.04-mile race. The win vaulted Wood to the top of the championship charts with only I • n • _ s the season finale at Daytona International Speedway remaining. Wood leads Copier Discount Warehouse's Dan Fischer by one point. 79 to 78. Fischer was third. behind Silva. Silva said he tried to stick with Wood in the early going, making contact at one point. "I had to get off the gas," Silva said. "We came together going into four and he had the inside line and I had to get off the gas - he pulled me through there. Almost lost the front going into three trying to catch him. It was like, 'Please stick,' and it did." As he was chasing Wood, Silva had Fischer on his rear. Fischer had a rough start to the race, even in the sparse field, and it took him a few laps to catch up. He probably fight for fourth.
