Fonnula lISA Sportbike Round 5: Portland International Raceway By PortLand International Raceway, Barnes held off the relentless pressure of defending champion Lee Acree to win the Sportbike class for the Hooters Suzuki team. It would be the start of a record four-win day for the Floridian. HENNY RAY ABRAMS PORTLAND, OR, SEPT 9 M ichael Barnes couldn't have known what was to come. Lap after lap, Acree would work hard to pass Barnes, only to get passed at some point, often by Barnes' better drives onto the threequarter-mile-Iong front straightaway. Acree took the lead a few times, but Barnes was never worried. He knew he could do the job when he needed and did, but he got help when Acree missed a shift on the final lap. "I never saw the white flag, so coming to the checkered, I was thinking that was the white flag, so 1 was pretty stoked," Barnes said. "I had to do a triple-take and see the blackand-white, and I'm pretty stoked." "I missed a shift on the back straightaway," Acree said. "I thought I could make a run on Barney. He rode the perfect race; he did everything right. I was the one who made a mistake, and he took advantage of it." Barnes said the difference was that he "was getting a better drive - I had a little more corner speed out of the last corner and a much better drive out onto the straightaway, and even if he had been in front of me, I would have been able to catch him at the line. I did it about five times through the race and just barely got him at the line. I was hoping I didn't have to do that." The strategy gave Barnes the win, by 0.304 seconds, with Acree second and his teammate, the late-charging Brian Parriott, a close third. Both Barnes and Acree knew each other's strengths and weaknesses and tried to exploit them. "He was getting me on the brakes
