Cycra-supported Gibson claimed second in the 250cc/Open A class and third overall, followed by Team Kawasaki/Maxxis Tires/Maier Plastics/Stroker Racing/M2R Helmetssponsored Whitaker. "Jeremy was flying today!" McCrea said. "I got Jeremy around the first turn. Then we rode together for the majority of the first lap. We started catching 250cc A guys, and I pulled away because Jeremy got held up." McCrea made three laps in an hour and 20 minutes and claimed the fastest lap, at 26:04. Mid-South's sixth round at East Fork Creek was no picnic for some by any means. Promoter Grady Short of Gamaliel Riding Supply gave everyone fair warning of the tough terrain that awaited them. They were served up a healthy portion of Vshaped hills, deep ruts, slime and stumps. He said it would be challenging, and it was. Out of the 144 contestants in attendance, 80 riders couldn't make it past one lap, and 44 did not finish. Many riders got stuck in the slime or going up steep hills. Some riders, such as Kevin Hopper, were gracious enough to help others, and even a few spectators such as Angie Hedgepath were willing to lend a helping hand. In spite of the hardships, many seemed to enjoy the event because it was a great track for spectators and a great track to prepare for the winter series. Meanwhile, Mid-South riders are in preparation for the upcoming season. They're expecting stiff competition, and there's talk of the return of John Maschino, Blair Bersano and Shad Ricketts, so McCrea admits he has bettered his eating habits and is running recently, while Mike Sampson is busy watching AA riders race and is waiting for a new bike. P.A. Allen is breaking in his brand-new KTM 400 EXC. As for this event, Four-Stroke C winner James Smith thought it was inspiring. "Part of me was relieved it was over," he admitted, "but part of me wanted to make another lap. I'm just thankful for no wrecks, no injuries, and no bike damage." eN Eest Fork Creek Here Scnmbles &emeliel, Kentucky Results: August 5, 2001 (Round II O/A: 1. Mike McCreo (Kow); 2.
