Rollercoaster Racing Tour Supercross Series Round 9: Shelby Supercross Timonium Fairgrounds: Austin Greenland (SA) won the 85cc class over Brandon Robinson and Evan Baer (64) at the third round of the Kevin McNicholas Memorial Short Track Series In Timonium, Maryland. Playin' with the Boys from a stray shower, leaving the walking areas of the track alleyways sloppy for the JMX race workers, but the track itself was perfect. A record entry of 398 caused a need for double divisions in 80cc D, Senior Mini and 125cc D. JMX promoter Williams announced that, beginning at the next round, everything would begin an hour earlier to help folks get back home at a more decent time. "We don't want to get the reputation of keeping people out until 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning," quipped Williams. By BARBARA WILLIAMS glas. Wood slipped under Sweeten off the second tum on the second lap for the lead. Reeves moved up to battle Sweeten, taking second on the fifth lap. On the next lap, as the leaders were coming off the fourth turn, there was a loud crack, almost like a clap of thunder. Corey Hormes and Chris Klinefelter had locked up and plowed into the plywood fence, knocking the section down. Both riders were okay, though they will be out of commission for a few weeks. The order stayed the same when the race was finally restarted later. Jim Hollister was quickest off the line in the Over 30 final, with Sweeten right behind him. This left Todd Stith, Reeves and Ed Hyde to battle for third. The front duo begall to trade the lead at almost every turn, with one trying the outside, the other low. For more than five laps they traded the lead until Sweeten got a little distance by the sixth lap and held the lead to the end, with Hollister a few lengths back. The Over 40 final was rather uneventful,' as Sweeten grabbed the lead right away from Bob Babcock and disappeared. After dominating both the 50cc (4-6) and 50cc Oil-Injected classes in the previous races, Bailey Spence had some competition from Ethan Allen in the 50cc (4-6) class at this round. Spence grabbed the lead on his Miller's Cycle-sponsored Lem, but Allen stayed right with him. On the third lap, Spence slid out in the fourth turn, collecting Allen; Allen was the quickest one up, still more than half a lap behind the leader. When Spence got going, he was almost ready to be lapped. Both sliced through the others like a hot knife through butter, with Allen taking the lead at the start of the sixth lap, and Spence took second the following lap. However, Allen had too much of a margin for Spence to overcome, and he finished a straight's length behind. In the Oil-Injected final, Spence rode a little more conservatively. Colin Webb finished second, about two lengths back. Austin Greenland took the 85cc lead over qUick-starting Thomas Mudgett Jr., on a 65, with Evan Baer, Mike Standiford and Brandon Robinson right behind. Mudgett started drifting backward a5 several riders began to pass him. Baer moved up to pressure Greenland for the lead for a few laps, but he drifted a little high off two on the seventh lap, letting Robinson into second heading off four for th~ white flag. Greenland bobbled slightly, but Robinson was too close to do anything before Greenland regained his momentum. The front three finished almost nose to tail. Joey Parks had an easy time winning the 65cc class after his primary competitor, Mudgett, hit the third turn a little too fast and a little too low, sliding out. Brett Pugh, Standiford and Tyler Kidwell staged a close battle for second for most of the race; the position went to Pugh. Several riders continued their class winning streaks: Kelly Bell won her third straight Women's final; Rick Price put his Cockeysville Cycles Honda in front of the 250cc B class; Babcock easily took the 400cc-c1ass win; Thomas Webb again won the 50cc (7-8) class; and John Lewis won his second straight 125cc final, this time on his regular KTM. John Kraft won the 600cc B for his first win ever. Corey Hormes led the 600cc A pack across the line. Jack Stedding slipped under Dave Smith heading for the checkered flag for the 500cc Two-Valve win. eN SHELBY, NC, AOG. 4 ee SportCycle/TNT Motorsportsbacked Chhasity Man of Lancaster was the top gun of the second 80cc D division at Shelby over a field of 16, and she also finished seventh in the first Senior Mini division against a dozen big fast boys. Weeklong rain wet the Shelby Supercross track, and Joe Williams' JMX Racing Promotions crew watered it again on Friday evening in anticipation of a large entry. Saturday morning brought a surprise soaking L Shelby Supercross: Chhaslty Man showed the boys in the second SCcc D division how to win, and then notched a seventh-place finish In the more competitive Senior Mini division et the ninth round of the Rollercoaster Racing Tour Supercross Series In Shelby, North Carolina. cue •• n e vv S • SEPTEMBER 12, 2001 81
