Some 240 riders attended the event, hoping to take home top honors in their respective classes. Holiday Powersports' Chris Gallt rode his mount to the number-one spot in Midland. Gallt was enjoying a chance to compete in his home state while the GNCCs are on a summer break. Gallt got the better of 16-year-old Bryan Dunlap, who had set his standards high coming into Midland. Dunlap was confident after finishing fourth overall at round six of the National Hare Scrambles held the previous weekend in Michigan. The final rider on the podium was current points leader Corey Par· lin. The Lansing Cycle/Klotz/Answer-supported Parlin almost succumbed to the heat, as he had at the National the weekend prior. After crossing the finish line, Parlin collapsed and was .ided by Chuck Barth. Amsoil-backed Corey Calkins nearly edged past P.rlin at the finjsh, coming up just two seconds short. This was the third time this season that Calkins has come up less than five seconds short at the checkered flag. The fifth-placed rider for the second week in a row was early leader Leonard Keen, who was awarded $50 for grabbing the holeshot in the Expert class. Bob Shinabargar and the hosting club handed out cash prizes to the top three overall. The top non·Expert at Midland was Smith/Wiseco/Moose/Boyesen/Notul-backed Mike Stapula, who topped the 200cc class for the second time this season and was ninth overall. In the Light Team division, the team of Lenny Hufton and Joe Munger grabbed the early lead on their Linwood Cycle/Team Garage/Johnny Panther/Quest KTM 200. Following close behind was another KTM 200, ridden by Michael Cook and Bob Bergman. The remaining seven teams followed closely. 50 (7-6): I. Justin Bogle (KTM); 2. Melon Maahs (KTM): 3.
