"gully" section of the course on the first loop to trail Len Sims in the Modem Classic Intermediate class, but the day didn't progress as well as the rider from Bend, Oregon - who was aboard a Yamaha TY 250 - had hoped it would. "I was the first rider through every one of my lines," Street said. "There were no tire marks, which made it really difficult. To make it worse, the tires on the bike were from 1974. I guess I'll know better next year. It was my own fault." Sims' tally of 24 points netted him the class win, followed by Street (38) and Jim Row. A top Northwest Motocross Expert, Row suffered a broken back at Sears Point several months earlier and was making his return to competition at the trials portion of the event. Row finished third in the Modem Classic Intermediate class to Sims and Street with a score of 40, placing ahead of his dad, Bill. Mike Salsman was the top performer in the Modem Classic Novice class with tallies of 0-1-1 in his three loops, which eamed the Washingtonian the top brass and most likely a move up to the next-highest classification for the following season. Michael McPeters (7) and Randy Dangermond (9) rounded out the top three in the largest class of the day while riding the easiest of the four lines. Parts Unlimited Off-Road Championship Series Round 2: Spring Creek Motocross Park Fredette Wins PJ1 Spring Creek 100 By STEVE BERKNER MILLVlll.E, MN, JUNE 24 awasaki Team Green's Jeff Fredette took overall honors during round two of the Parts Unlimited OffRoad Championship Series by besting the 76-rider field. The 43-year-old KDX220 pilot used patience and consistency to win the PJ1 Spring Creek GP 100. Fredette finished three minutes ahead of Gas Gas pilot Joey Ambrosini with a time of three hours and 13 minutes. Third-, fourth- and fifth-place honors went to Suzuki jockey Jack Lane and KTM riders Kyle Nelson and David Stickel, who finished with times of 3:19, 3:20 and 3:21, respectively. Fredette overcame a less-thanstellar midpack start, finishing the first lap of the eight-lap race in lIth nearly four minutes behind Lane, who finished the first lap in first. "The first lap was kind of tricky," Fredette said. "The freight train wasn't going too fast, and I got hung up behind some of the guys who were having trouble, but I knew it was going to be a long race and I just tried to be patient, have fun and stay focused." Meanwhil~, the lead swapped back and forth between AMA District 23 (Minnesota) riders Lane, Nelson and Jesse Blomberg. Nelson took the holeshot, only to crash hard in the famous Millville whoops, while Blomberg took the lead. K Lane and Blomberg took turns as the front-runner. "I must have crashed four times before making it back to the start," Lane said. "Each time, [Blomberg] would get by and I'd follow until he'd crash and then I'd take the lead." "After [Nelson] crashed," Blomberg said, "I had the lead and then 1 started banging bars [with Lane] and we'd each take turns going down." Lane eventually went through the barrels in first place, only to be passed by Blomberg when he hesitated at the end of the straightaway leading into the pits. "I guess 1 wasn't paying attention," Lane sajd. "After 1 went through the barrels, I wasn't sure where to go, so 1 stopped to look around and Jesse went by." Lane retook the lead, with Blomberg second. Then a hardcharging Nelson retook the lead. Nelson's second-lap efforts netted him the fastest lap time of the day: 21 minutes. Fredette also had an excellent second lap, netting the second-fastest lap tim'e of the day, a minute and a half slower than Nelson's. "By the second lap," Fredette said, "I was able to move up a few spots when the trail started to open up." By the second circulation of the 7.2-mile course, Fredette had moved up seven places to fourth overall. Fredette continued his charge and by Spring Creek Motocross Park: Jeff Fredette won the overall at round two of the Parts Unlimited Off-Road Championship Series, the Spring Creek GP 100. "[By lap six] 1 knew Joey was coming," Fredette explains, "and I started to hear another rider catch me. I knew [Ambrosini] was still a few minutes back, but I was definitely getting pushed by someone. 1 was about halfway through the sixth lap and I noticed this guy sitting along the side of the trail. As soon as I went by, he started to follow me, and before you knew it, he's pushing me. Whether he was a lapped rider or someone just screwing around, I didn't know. The harder 1 rode, the faster he'd go. The frustrating part was, he'd never try and pass me. I didn't realize it at the time, but it was (Spring Creek Motocross Park track owner and former National Hare Scrambles Champion] Johnny Martin. Johnny had been riding around with a helmet camera, videotaping the race. I don't know if it had any factor on the race or not. By then, I had picked my pace. But had I known it was Johnny videotaping, I'm sure I would have started joking around, made more mistakes." eN the end of lap three he was in second. By the end of lap four, he was first. "These kind of races never seem to take shape until about the halfway point," Fredette said. "You definitely have to pace yourself, and eventually you move up toward the front." Fredette consistently maintained an approximately two-minute lead. Meanwhile, Ambrosini struggled with suspension setup and loose harrdlebars and had to make a time-consuming pit stop at the beginning of lap three. By then he was in 10th. "We miscalculated the suspension settings and had to make some changes," Ambrosini said. "My bars had also come loose and needed to be tightened. At the beginning of lap two, 1 told my dad that on the next lap I'd be stopping." After making the needed adjustments, Ambrosini consistently made up time on Fredette, moving to within two minutes of the leader by the end of lap six, when he moved into second. By then, both Nelson and Spring Creek Motocross Park Blomberg had fallen off the pace, as both riders suffered flat tires.
