Los Banos Fairgrounds: Craig Truglio was the Top Gun Shootout winner at round five of the AMP/GFI Los Banos Top Gun Summercross Series in Los Banos, California. In fact, Hageman, sitting in the fifth spot from the rear, had one of the best spots, set on the downhill side of the spectator tabletop. Nevertheless, the two-time past winner wasn't feeling confident after posting a less-than-stellar performance in the regular Pro races held earlier in the evening. "I took a pair of fourths overall tonight in the 125cc and 250cc races because I'm just making too many mistakes," Hageman said. "Hopefully, my bad luck tonight is behind me and I can win this one.» Gridded in the last spot was Pestana and, after handily winning both 250cc Pro motos, the Clawson Motorsports/Fox/ Arnette Goggles/One Industries-backed rider looked to have the speed to pull off the win. At the wave of the green flag, the 12-rider field got under way and, surprisingly, Truglio got off to a good start. Gridded smack-dab in between the two spectator tabletops, Truglio had to climb his way up the face of the second tabletop. Hageman also got off to a good start and eventually displaced the Intermediate riders up front. However, Truglio was on a mission, and he quickly caught up to Hageman, who was now in the lead. Known as one of the cleanest riders in Northern California, Truglio put an uncharacteristic block-pass on Hageman after dicing with the Suzuki rider for several laps. The move put him in the lead, and while he continued to distance himself from Hageman, Pestana was quietly closing in from behind. After spending several precious laps getting clear of the field, Pestana only had Hageman between himself and Truglio, but Hageman hung tough and battled with Pestana for several laps. Although Pestana finally got by Hageman, the battle cost him time that he could not make 62 AUGUST 29, 2001 • cue I up. Truglio took the checkers about four seconds ahead of Pestana for the win, while Hageman, Boothe and Billy Jurevich rounded out the top five. "I've started in that hole twice before and I guess the third time's a charm," Truglio said. "I got ahead of everybody real quick and everything just went good. Usually, I get held up in traffic, and tonight it felt like everybody was just letting me by. They changed the format tonight by spacing out the Intermediates farther ahead of the Pros, and I think that helped. Once I got the lead, I tried to pace myself, and I was keeping an eye on Pestana, because he was going fast - but I finally won one and it feels good.» Brandon Jones took a well-earned pair of moto wins in the 125cc Intermediate class for the overall win. The veteran Yamaha pilot has shown good speed for several years now and he found the supercross track to his liking. In moto one, Jones took a wire-towire victory after brief battles with Cory McDaniel and Gary Ludlum. Ludlum held off McDaniel for second while Watt and David Gassin rounded out the top five. In moto two, Nick Davis grabbed the holeshot, with Jones tucked in right behind. As the field approached the first single jump, McDaniel and Ludlum both tangled and went down. Jones eventually made his way by Davis, although Davis gave him a run all the way to the checkers. Steven Hernandez, Watt and J.R. Archutowski rounded out the top five. Watt, via a 4-4 run, snagged second overall on the night, while Davis ended up third on the night after a 7 -2 effort. By BARBARA WILLIAMS SHELBY, NC, JULY 21 he list of winners at round seven of the Rollercoaster Racing Tour Supercross Series sounded like a convention of McDonalds franchise owners: Shane McElrath won the 50cc (4-6) class, Michael McQuay took both the 65cc (10-11) and 65cc Open victories, Jack McMenamin was first in 65cc (7-9) racing, and Jack's dad, Mike McMenamin, owned the Over 30 C/D class. A large entry of more than 360 riders forced double divisions in 80cc D, 125cc D and, interestingly enough, 50cc Shaft Beginner competition. "Shelby is a big track for supercross, but we didn't feel right putting 25 little 50s out there at the same time,» smiled JMX promoter Joe Williams. "The riders could probably handle it, but we wanted to keep the parents from being a hazard.» The JMX safety record remains intact this year, with again no transportable injuries at this round of the series. Ryan Moore of Belmont, North Carolina, dominated the 50cc (4-6) qualifier aboard his speedy Yamaha, with McElrath not even in sight. However, once the gate dropped on the main event, McElrath took over, leaving no doubt who was in charge. However, Husky man Addison Parrish was the only consistent placer, finish- T ing third; everyone else finished radically different than in the qualifier. Following McElrath across the finish line were Zach Murphy (7-2), Parrish (3-3), Moore (1-4) and Cole Porter (4-5). McQuay was in a different ZIP code in both the Junior Mini and 65cc (10-11) classes, leaving everyone else to argue over who was going to end up second. Christopher Haas and Brandon Humphries traded places from qualifier to main event in Junior Mini; Haas came up with the runnerup spot in the main. Trevor Moose was consistent in third. McQuay's 65cc (10-11) outing was similarly dominant. Coming off the line first, the KTM rider led the way in all laps. Humphries, Jesse Lawing, Jeremiah Driscoll and Chhasity Man followed McQuay through turn one and proceeded to put on a great show of their own as they chased the leader. The battle for the rest of the top five slots settled into two parts: Humphries and Lawing, then Driscoll and Man. Humphries had finished second in the qualifier and looked good to repeat until Lawing made a surprise pass late in the race that Humphries could not answer. Miss Man, who had finished fourth in the qualifier, looked high and low for a way to get around Driscoll but could find no opening. Halfway through the five-lap main, Driscoll hit a rough spot and went
