endured his first taste of having back wheels circling in front of him. Cook, who battled away for little reward throughout the afternoon, had a serious grapple for second place with Hans Clausen before succumbing in heat 14, but Lyons also ran a last off the outside in heat 17, having done the same off gate three when Ermolenko bolted away to win 15. But the Aussie, who had more cause than most to concern himself with the pre-meeting rain with his testimonial meeting arranged at Belle Vue 24 hours later, had already done enough. Jonsson, struggling to focus due to an eye injury, certainly didn't see Stuart Robson's groove-assisted attack coming down the back straight of heat 16. Robson caught some unexpected grip to give Jonsson an unceremonious barge to take the lead. Jonsson swept back in front entering the second lap before handing Robson - his Coventry teammate - some indignant instructions to remain on his inside! Laukkanen banked his fourth win in heat 17 as the entertaining Cook fought hard for second place ahead of Nieminen and Lyons, and Clausen registered his fourth second-place finish in 18 to ensure he lined up in the run-off for seventh. Nicholls, needing three points for the title, instead had to tuck in behind the fast-starting Havelock in heat 19, Havelock finally coming good as the gates worked in his favor, and it left Gunnestad and Andersson to contest heat 20. Andersson got past the Poole man to earn himself a chance in the run-off, with Gunnestad's second ensuring he was safely through. The draw for gates in the first runoff left Havelock with the outside, and the portents were far from promising for the Brit. Ermolenko, off two, moved swiftly into the lead, but Havelock expertly cut back off the first two turns to all but get upsides of the Californian veteran down the back straight. Ermolenko managed to repel the challenge on the third turn, but Havelock settled into second place ahead of Andersson and Clausen, and both riders should now profit from their final positions. That left just the race-off for the title. Laukkanen got away off the inside, but was pegged back by Nicholls on the third bend. Laukkanen burrowed back, but Nicholls refused to accept defeat and got his front wheel ahead once more, only for the Finn to have the last say in what was a fitting finale to a ultracompetitive event. eN Light, fast, exclusive• and • now very Inexpensive...
