STORY AND PHOTOS BY PETE EMME DENMARK, WI, JULY 22 iteralf)', the heat was on at round six of the Northern Cup MX Series. Most riders were more worried about beating the intense heat than about the guys behind them. Temperatures reached as high as 95 degrees during the day, with a heat index of 107 not quite the norm for Wisconsin. Michael Wend ricks made the haul from Illinois to cool the competition in the Sportsman B class with backto-back wins over 34 riders. The Ron and Brian's Motorsports-backed Suzuki rider was in the area the day prior to round six to get in some racing and decided to check out the popular series in northern Wisconsin. Wendricks shot out to the holeshot, with Honda rider Mark Schick about three bike lengths back as they headed into the fast uphill left-hander. Wendricks gained a little ground as he skimmed off the stepup, shot into the corner and hit the double, staying low to the ground and doubling his lead on Schick and Eric Weise. Wendricks sliced his way through the hard-pack on the second lap, while Jeremi Smith moved past Weise through the switchbacks. That didn't last long, as Weise regained the position when Smith went down. Weise gained some ground on second-placed Schick, who used most of the track to keep Weise off his tail. Meanwhile, Wendricks extended his lead. Due to the rising temperatures, laps were cut from the normal four to three. Wendricks checked out with a big win. Schick remained in second, with Weise third. Jason Mathie and Sean Lentz rounded out the top five. Tom Dretzka got the moto-two holeshot after placing eight in moto one (and placing sixth overall in Vet Over 30 competition) and held off Stewart and Gauthier in the first turn, with Warner and Jonas midpack. Gauthier passed Stewart. Warner and Jonas worked their way to the front and caught Stewart on the second lap. Warner passed him a lap later, but Jonas faded. Dretzka was on the gas as the white flag came out. Gauthier was about five bike lengths behind, with Warner closing in. Gauthier had to retain his position to keep the overall. He reeled in Dretzka coming down through the chicane but lost some ground to the leader in the whoops. Warner moved right onto Gauthier's rear fender with half a lap remaining. Gauthier moved up to run on Dretzka's heels, but Dretzka's momentum carried him to the win. Warner tried diving inside but Gauthier held his ground for second. Dretzka went 8-1 for fourth overall. Consistency paid off Gauthier, as he went 2-2 for another overall. Warner's 1-3 finishes garnered second overall. David Rock hung tough for third overall with 3-4 moto scores. Wendricks immediately pulled out to a sizable margin on the first lap. Schick and Smith battled for second throughout the moto, and the battle for fourth was tight the entire moto. Wendricks came, saw and conquered the Sportsman class. Schick went 2-2 for second and Weise went 3-4 for third. Masters Over 25 class points leader Phil Gauthier spun hard off of the concrete start pad but managed to keep control and get to the first turn ahead of 15 other riders, followed by Shane Visintainer, John Stewart, Tom Nielsen and David Rock. Archrival Alan Jonas arrived at the gate but found he had a flat front tire; once he hit the hard-pack, it began to roll on him, sending him further back in the pack. Meanwhile, n e _ s e Gauthier was out front, moving out to a three-second lead. Honda rider Jason Warner worked his way into third after a poor start. Warner passed Visintainer on the second lap and set his sights set on Gauthier. Warner came charging down the hill before the white flag and cut Gauthier's lead to two bike lengths. Gauthier had no idea that Warner was on his tail in the whoops, as Warner cut to the inside and took the lead. Gauthier hung with Warner for the last lap but WMN: 1. Tabatha Miller; 2.
