In the first Scratch semi, the pole went to Brad Sauer. Jim Estes loaded into two, with Bobby Krips in three and John DeFries in four. Estes got the drop on the field and led from start to finish. Sauer hung tight for second and a transfer to the main, along with Estes. Krips and DeFries would meet again in the Consi. The second Scratch semi had Castro on the pole, with Danny Perkins in two. "Rockin'" Richard Jones in three and Charlie Cooley on the outside. The gate went to Castro, with the other three close enough to exchange phone numbers. They all got through the first tum, but on the back straight Jones caught a piece of Cooley's wheel, sending rider and bike head over apple cart. and taking out about 10 feet of fence before they stopped; needless to say, the red came out. Jones' bike was toast. and he retired. On the restart, Castro again got a great gate, and he led the quick four-lapper from start to finish. Cooley was second. Perkins and Jones moved to the Consi. From the pole, Krips took the lead off the line in the Scratch Consi. DeFries got off last but put in a great ride, getting by Perkins and then Krips as the white fiag came out for the win. Krips was second and Perkins third. The pole for the Scratch main went to Castro, with Sauer in two, Estes in three, and Cooley in four. Castro cut the gate and was gone. Estes gave chase but was just no match for Castro. Sauer and Cooley battled for the third, with the nod going to Sauer. The Handicap main had DeFries all alone on the 20. Perkins, Krips and the Sauers, Brad and Robbie, shared the 30. Castro was on the 60. Krips got a good lead, but the red came out when Brad and Perkins got tangled up in three and went down very hard. Perkins was unable to make the restart. They lined up again, and again Krips went out on top, but Castro was on the move and bearing down on the leader, smelling the double win. It took Castro four laps to run down Krips, and when the white flag came out he was in control, and the win was his. Krips was second, with Robbie third, Brad fourth, and DeFries fifth. Billy Hiles bided his time in the Division Two main, and it paid off when leader Shane Kump slipped off the groove and Hiles took over. Matt Browne also got through, claiming second. Kump was third. In the Division Two B main, the young lady from Down Under, Kim Stevens, led for two laps before she lost it to Rod Lenz, who took the checkered flag. Stevens was second. The race finished with Carlotta in front, followed by Corey Eaton, mounted on a Rotax, and Miguel Denatos, on a CCM Rotax. The Vintage B contest was an easy victory for Donnie Darrah when fellow Yamaha rider Johnny Larson hit a neutral in the first tum on the fifth lap and lost the lead he had held from the start. Sierra Water/Mallott's Honda- Yamaha/ Mother's Polishes/Union 76/Wiseco-sponsored Nick Moore was in the lead across the line in the Open A. In the combined 250cc/Vet Pro ranks, Doug Dubach took home the lion's share of the cash after winning both motos aboard his White Brothers/Dr. D/O'Neil-backed Yl250F. In moto one, Factory R&D's Craig Davis took the holeshot, with Terry Fowler, Gordon Ward and Ty Kady behind him. Dubach started in fifth, but by halfway he was in second place, behind the new ieader, Kady. Dubach shoved past Kady with two laps to go and cruised to the moto win. Ward was a close third, while TRE/Honda's Turbo Reif made a last-lap pass on Davis for fourth. Kady ripped the holeshot in moto two, with Reif and Dubach right behind him. Ward ran fourth and Willy Musgrave fifth. The top three separated from the pack in a dogfight for the lead. Just past haifway, Kady bobbled and ran off the track. Dubach took over the point, with Reif in second and Steve Mertens in third. With open track in front of him, Dubach put a three-second gap on Reif by the time the checkered flag came out. Mertens was third, while Kady settled for fourth and Ward rolled in fifth. On the day, Dubach (1-1) was the overall winner and Reif (4-2) was runner-up, while Kady (2-4) finished third. Ward (3-5) and Mertens (7-3) filled out the top five. In 125cc Pro action, Mertens returned to beat a competitive field of. racers, with his twomota sweep earning the overall win on the day. Mertens stole the holeshot in moto one and never looked back, taking the moto win impressively. Behind him, l-Racing/WindTWS's Mark Tilley and TRE's Tim Weigl and dueled for most of the moto, with Tilley edging out Weigl and for the runner-up spot. In moto two, Reif took the holeshot, with Mertens, Weigland and Tilley in tow. Reif was riding well but a small mistake late in the race left the door open for Mertens, who slipped by for another moto win. Weigland finished well in third. On the day. Mertens was the overall winner by virtue of his perfect 1-1 rides. Weigland's consistent 3-3 scores were good for the runner-up slot, while Tilley (2-4) settled for third. Chris Herrin topped the always-competitive 250cc Beginner division after winning both motos. In the first go-around, Herrin battled early with Fred Winemiller and Ryan Woods before pulling away for the win. In moto two, Winemiller snared the holeshot. but Herrin took over the point before lap two and went on to win comfortably again. Winemiller (2-2) was next best on the day, while Charles Marriott (4-3) finished third overall. Results Results Castro Takes Over 68 UKIAH. CA.
