ISRA Speedway Series Round 3: Lemhi County Fairgrounds Sherman, Watters Swap Wins two, Marty Shefts in three, Mark Van Zuyen in four, Shane Golpanee in five, and Tyler Hansen in six. Tom was out front first, with Marty right behind him, followed by last round's winner, Tyler Hansen. On lap two, Marty went wide out of two and then he got into the soft sand berm surrounding the track, which grabbed his front end and pitched him hard over the bars. On lap three, Tyler did the same thing and got off even harder, breaking his collarbone, dislocating his shoulder and cracking his shoulder blade - and ending his season. Tom Sherman ran alone to the finish, followed by only Van Zuyen. The rest of the field either crashed or broke, or both. The first Handicap heat had MacAfee and Marty on the 40-yard line, Trent Hansen on the 20, and Shane Golfini, Warford, Trevor Sherman and Vromans on the zero. By the end of lap one, Trent was in the lead, followed by Marty. MacAfee was still picking his way through the frontyard riders. Riding smooth and fast, Trenton took the win, with Marty in second and MacAfee third, followed by the rest. The second Handicap heat had Tom Sherman and Mike Hansen on the 40, Watters on the 30, Carsen Shefts on the 20, and Van Zuyen on the zero. By the end of lap two, Watters was in the lead, with Tom trying to get by. Mike was still struggling with Van Zuyen and Carsen. Sherman tried hard, but Watters pulled out the win. The next race was the "family feud" round, featuring the Shermans By BRENDAN FENNESSY SALJ'iION, 10, JULY 8 om Sherman and Jeff Watters swapped wins in the Handicap and Scratch mains at the third round of the ISRA Speedway Series. The tight, short deep track cut into the Lemhi County Fairgrounds' rodeo ring provided for lots of exciting action and even more exciting getoffs. Once again, riders came from Utah, Idaho, Montana and Washington to compete in the third annual Budweiser/castJecreekoutfitters.com/ bikeboneyard.com-sponsored event. The first Scratch heat had seven riders on the line, with Carsen Shefts in one, Trent Hansen in two, Shane MacAfee in three, Jeff Watters in four, Herb Warford in five, Mike Hansen in six, and Dennis Vromans in seven. Watters, who had not raced in more than a year, came out of the gate first, with Mike hot on his heels. MacAfee was riding hard - too hard and he came off on lap two, leaving Watters and Mike alone out front. His year off did not seem to affect Watters too much, because he was able to hold off Mike Hansen's many attempts to get by him. At the checkers, it was Watters, Mike Hansen, Trent Hansen, Shefts, Warford, Vromans and MacAfee. The second Scratch heat had another father-son duo on the line. Tom Sherman and his son Trevor Sherman faced off against each other for the first time in a speedway race. Trevor was on the pole, with Tom in T Lemhi County Fairgrounds: (from left to right) Marty Shefts, Shane MacAfee, Jeff Watters and Tom Sherman blast off the 4o-yard line in the Scratch main at round three of the ISRA Speedway series in Salmon, Idaho. 58 AUGUST 22, 2001 • cue I • n • _ ,. vs. the Shefts - and the track ain't big enough for the two ( ... er, four) of 'em. After a couple of restarts due to the fact that family honor was at stake, the Shermans came out on top, with Tom winning, followed by Trevor, and then Marty and Carsen Shefts. In the Scratch Consi round, MacAfee was on the pole, with Golfini in two, Marty in three, Vromans in four, and Warford in five. MacAfee absconded with the holeshot and rode uncontested to the win. The Handicap Consi had Mike Hansen on the 40, Carsen Shefts on the 20, and Trevor Sherman, Vromans, Warford and Golfini on the zero. Trevor commanded the lead out of the gate. Mike was too far back to be a threat. Vromans and Warford both fell prey to the Salmon sand demon and stacked themselves up on the back straight. Trevor took the win. While running second, Mike crashed out in tum four on the last lap. The Scratch main had Van Zuyen in one, Watters in two, Mike Hansen in three, Trevor Sherman in four, Tom Sherman in five, and Trenton Hansen in six. Watters was the first out of turn two, again followed by a determined Mike and Tom. After three laps, Tom worked his way under Mike in turn four. Watters took the win, and Tom beat Mike over the line by four inches. Van Zuyen missed the podium by one in his first speedway event. Trevor and Trent rounded out the rest of the field. In the Handicap main, MacAfee, Marty, Tom and Watters all started from the 40, with Trenton on the 20 and Van Zuyen on the zero. Van Zuyen had the initial lead until Watters and Tom went by. Tom was grinding on Watters every chance he got. On lap three, he went under Watters out of turn two, forcing Watters wide into turn three. Watters tried to square up and race Tom to the flag but couldn't do it. Tom Sherman won, followed by Watters. Van Zuyen filled out the podium, and Shefts, MacAfee and Hansen rounded out the field. 1:1I lemhi County Fairgrounds Salmon, Idaho Results: July 9, ZOOl [Round 31 SCR CONSI: 1. Shone MocAf..: 2. AdrenalX Supercross Series Round 2: Adams County Fairgrounds Kellogg, Cohrs Break Fast like Champions By JOHN CLIFFORD BRIGHTON, CO, JULY 14 osh Kellogg, the RMXA Rider of the Year and the Arthritis Foundation's Mountain Plains branch Pro athlete spokesman, put on a show for the Adams County Fairgrounds crowd. Fox TV, UPN and Wide Definition Network marveled at the Colorado Powersports Yamaha rider's control of the muddy Supercross track that was made for John Dowd. Kyle Cohrs captured two wins, including the First National Bank's U.S. Savings Bond Supermini Sprint, the prize of which will mature on his 18th birthday. Some 169 Amateur riders started the day on a Stacy Ditter Track Designs course. Cohrs earned the coveted EVS Holeshot Award, along with other Novice riders. Cohr's 1-1 performance started his day off right. Brandon Belisle kept Cohrs in sight in the first moto but slipped back to fifth in the second moto, which gave him fourth overall. Yamaha racer David Budik took third place with consistent 4-3 finishes. Jayson Corbett led the first moto briefly, but the whoops dropped him to third. His second j moto was closer to Cohrs', making for a 3-2 for second overall. Radio station KPBI's band Numb opened up the Battle of the Bands, and Defile had just wrapped up a great set when Mother Nature continued a week's worth of rain. Vigilant work by Stacy Ditter, HEI Construction aAd Nationwide Equipment for more than an hour returned the trac.k to ridable condition. Kellogg had the crowd on its feet with amazement. First came his 1-1 rides to take the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant 125cc Pro purse. Kevin Hall, on his F&S Suzuki, placed second in the first moto but crashed out of moto two. Matt Whitmarsh's 3-2 showing earned second. Logan Darien was a steady third. James Yearick and new Pro Brady Sharp rounded out the top five. The Open Pro contest was the easiest race for Kellogg, as a good start and no looking back put him a quarter of the track ahead of Whitmarsh, who was second. Travis Bannister was third, followed by Hall and Yearick. The Tri-City Cycles $500 Pro purse was in addition to the 100-percent payback. Already the rider with the most cash and prestige, Kellogg was out to keep the train rolling.
