Yamaha Dealers Series Round 5: Glen Helen Raceway Park Hesson said he was very pleased with the series turnout at Glen Helen and equally pleased that Yamaha was the title sponsor. eN (Left) "Radical ft Ron Turner (9) won the first Senior Expert moto. Retuming champion Bob Maxwell got the moto-two holeshot and held Tumer off for the second-moto win, but Tumer took the overall at round five of the Yamaha Dealers Series. STORV AND PHOTOS BV BETH LARoCK SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 15 xciting final-round racing, a !-.:=J freestyle air show, and the raffle of a GYT-R/Yamaha YZ250 made for an exhilarating day at Glen Helen Raceway, site of the fifth round of the Yamaha Dealers Series, where local dealership John Burr Cycles, for the seventh year in a row, claimed the Dealers Cup for the most sponsorship points. Putting up a good fight for second was Montclair Yamaha, followed by 23 other dealerships. The Yamaha Dealers Series has gained a reputation for exciting racing for all ages and all classes of riders in a family atmosphere. The Senior Expert class demonstrated what Amateur racing is all about. The racers in this class sparred throughout the motos, and then congregated after the finish to congratulate their friends for their hard-fought battles. Returning champion Bob Maxwell had some strong competition this year from "Radical" Ron Turner and Matt Tedder. Going into the final round, Turner had the series lead, but the points spread wa's close enough for Maxwell or Tedder to seize first should Turner falter. In moto one, Turner and Tedder swapped the lead several times, but Turner gained the upper hand at the finish line. Maxwell, back in fourth behind Lee Bacon, was struggling with bike problems. In moto two, Maxwell charged into the holeshot turn in first, with Turner in pursuit. Tedder got a late start off the line and held eighth. Turner closed on Maxwell several times, but Maxwell held him off. Meanwhile, Tedder weaved between riders and advanced into third. A triumphant Maxwell crossed the finish line first, followed by Turner and Maxwell. His second-place finish still gave Turner first overall for the day and for the series. 61en Heletl I18cewsy Psr1c Saln Bem.....ina. ClIlifam;" Results; July 15, 2DDI [Round 51 P/W SHAfT: 1. (Above) Donald Upton (117) battles Turbo Reif (3) in the 250cc Pro class at Glen Helen Raceway Park in San Bemardino, Califomia. (Left) A John Burr Cyclessponsored half-time event featured Freestyle Pros Chuck Carothers and D.J. Umphries performing highflying jumps off a specially designed ramp. Here, Umphries performs a "Heart Attack ft in his first official freestyle event. "The first moto, I hurt my wrist again," the John Burr Cycles/Pro Circuit/Troy Lee Designs/Goat Eyewear/ Fiancee Patti-supported Turner explained. "It's not 100 percent yet. I don't have enough strength yet. It won't be long, though - I'm coming back." IMS/C eet/ J PR/EVS- ba c ked Maxwell admitted that he was still having problems with his bike during the second moto. "I think the start helped a lot," said Maxwell. "I purposely ran it out of gas before the start, so it leaned it out. I left the gas off and turned it on right before the start. The minute I let off it going into a turn, it would hesitate when I turned the throttle. The last lap, he [Turner] was making a charge. I was real happy, especially after the first moto. I turned a bad day into good. I feel good." Somewhat sheepishly, Tedder admitted that his starting gate strategy backfired for moto two. ApparentIy, in previous rounds, Tedder arrived at the starting gate with about 30 seconds left to go and then "took off on the gate." "My second moto, I missed the start," he explained. "I was sitting on the line, wondering, 'Which race is this?' and I saw Ron and Bob Maxwell in the first corner." Donald Upton, Sean O'Conner, Gordon Ward and Turbo Reif brought excitement to the 250cc Pro moto during the final round. West Coast Motorsports/Maxxis Tires/Pro Gripbacked Upton claimed the first-moto win, but not before bumping bars sev· eral times with Reif, whose motor seized during lap two, taking him out of contention for the day. Ward briefly took over second but crashed in Bud's Creek, placing him back in eighth for moto one. O'Conner cruised into second and held it to the finish. In moto two, "Holeshot" O'Conner led the pack, but Ward quickly took the lead. TWS/TN/Shinko Tires/Pro Valve's Ward claimed the secondmoto win, with Upton and O'Conner taking second and third. "I tried," said a very satisfied Ward. "I pushed it as hard as I could and pulled away. I got a little tired, but I held on. This was a really good track - plenty of lines out there." In the Vet Novice class, it was Alex Zapata's day, taking wins in both motos. After the second moto, Zapata summed up the series, saying; "Thank you, Glen Helen. Appreciate all the Yamaha Dealers getting together and putting together such a great series. Can't ask for more." At the closing ceremonies, Vet Intermediate Mark Howell's name was drawn as the winner of a 2001 YZ250, donated by GYT-R and Yamaha Motors. Yamaha Motors' John cue •• n • _ S • AUGUST 22. 2001 43
