2001 Surfercross • PHOTOS BY FRANK HOPPEN SAN a..EJlIEIm:AND SAN JAC1I'ITO, CA, AUG. 6-7 rYJ7hiJe people across the United W States were slaving away at work-day .employment on Monday and Tuesday of last week, some of the country's top motocrossers and surfers were taking a break from their -jobs- (there was a two-week recess in the AMA National Championship I'\X Series) by participating in their hobbjes - motocross and surfing! The 2001 version of the now-traditional (and still unique) Surfercross event took place at Southern California's Trestles (a famous surf spot) and Competition Park, and while most of the athletes were relatively awkward in their respective unfamiliar realms, it's safe to say that a good time was had by all. The two-day event was sponsored by Oneil, Oakley, Asterisk, Yamaha, Hansen's, !"iller Beer and Competition Park and featured one day in the water and another day on the track, but since it took place in the midst of a heat wave, the participants definitely seemed to prefer their time in the Pacific (many of the s·urfers opted out of the second MX moto). While the word "competition" is used only half-seriously with this event for the most part, results are tallied (these .are athletes, after aU), and this time around it was moto-head Dave Castillo and world-class surfer c.J. Hubgood combining to take the overall win (the event is run via a team format, with one motocrosser and one surfer making up each squad). Second place went to Kawasaki technician Joel Albrecht and big-wavesurfer Mike Parsons. CN lAbovet ...- .
